It’s beneficial time! I’m hoping the time and money spent on theses lady beetle larvae will help these Broadbeans who are completely infested with aphids!
It seems to happen every season, they just thrive on the growing tips of these plants. We’ve been waiting for it to warm up a little and to see some evidence of lady beetle action before purchasing some as they could just go into hibernation if it’s too cold, despite the plentiful food source!

10 points if you can spot a larvae on the plants!

We’ll be at hardysbaymarket tomorrow and thecentralcoastfarmersmarket market this Sunday!

See you there :)

I did a little experiment with the last cucumber succession. I planted two trays with the radical tip pointing down into the tray. The radical tip is where the root comes out of the seed. Thinking for efficiency, planing tip down the root can easily go in the direction it’s meant to. The others I simply put in the tray without consideration of its position but made note that they were mostly laying flat.
Of the two trays pictured, can you guess which tray is which?
There is a distinct difference between the two trays, with the one on the left still having the seed hull on the cotyledons and the seed hulls of the ones on the right have already dropped off!

WHERE TO BUY THIS WEEK:

We are planning on being at the central coast farmers market this Sunday and hardys bay this afternoon but there’s a water of sickness passing through the house atm so it hour by hour day by day! Will do a post if we’re not going to make it to either markets.

Don’t you love it when people get inspired! This was sent to me by a friend and neighbour whose daughter asked for some microgreens for a food tech assignment she had!

Microgreens really take the simplest of dishes to that next level! I have no doubt this student scored highly in her assignment.

Speaking of students. Do you remember Vince who was working with us for a term through his school outreach program late last year? I was trying to find the post but couldn’t! Anywho… I recently received an update on his adventures in the US! He’s been working on a farm pulling garlic and potatoes! Head over to patchworkgreenfarm so see what’s happening on the other side of the world in veggie growing!

This is what happened when I tried to get a jump on the season but only put in half the infrastructure. I planted 320 cucumber seeds and popped them into the germination chamber at a toasty temperature of 25˚C a few weeks ago and a handful popped up right away and grew well. The others that were slower to germinate did not experience the same fate. Unfortunately once seeds start to germinate in the germ chamber they need to come out to prevent them from becoming too leggy (long stemmed). So I brought them out but without a heat mat to keep the soil temperature nice and warm for them most of them perished or just didn't germinate. ☹️
But! Luckily there's an electrician in the family who can rig stuff up like a DIY heat bench for a fraction of the cost of heat mats for that area. So Michael has been working on this recently and today we picked up some sand and finished the bench. We sowed the cucumbers right away and put them in the germ chamber so that they will have a nice warm bed to sit on when they come out. Hopefully I get better germination this time!

The nursery is nearly complete with the heat table going in today. The last few things on the list are the roll up sides and a few new benches (yet to be built) to maximise the seedling and micro green space. Once that is done, we can finally clean it up and make use of the full space.

It’s a beautiful morning today! Hopefully my fingers warm up soon! If anyone is coming to the central coast farmers market this morning I’ve left a box at the farm. It would be greatly appreciated if you could swing by and pick it up! It’s in the wash pack on the bench; it’s a cardboard box with kimchi in it!

Free jar of kimchi for your troubles!

Hey everyone! We’ve been a bit quiet on here lately. Very busy with the nursery upgrade and now Michael’s on holidays with Bonnie so I’m solo on the farm!!

I’ve been planning the up coming season over the last few weeks and it’s pretty exciting :)

We’ve had dribs and drabs of produce through winter and been able to get to the Central coast farmers market randomly and have started back at Hardys bay market!

You’ll find me there tomorrow with these beautiful custard apples from a spray free farm on the mid north coast! They’re ready now so if you can’t make it to the market and would like to get your hands on some of these delicacies please get in touch! I can’t eat them all while Michael is away!!

I’m thinking of running a working bee to w**d some hedge rows this weekend. Get in touch to register your interest :)

Finally I’ll be back at the central coast farmers market on Sunday 9th august!!

It’s about 2.5 weeks since starting the works on the nursery and the floor is finally done. We still need to install the w**d mat, but the major work is done.

We have raised the floor by more than half a metre on one side, dug many many holes, the deepest 1100mm! Finally installed about 40 concrete sleepers and bricked up the existing old glass house foundations.

Next step is to raise the roof! 🙌
This job is for tomorrow.
Not exactly sure how it’s going to be done but it too needs to be raised by about half a metre at one end. The existing roof doesn’t have anywhere near enough fall on it!
Then it will be on to installing the doors and rodent mesh to keep those pesky 🐁 🐀 out!

We’re anticipating being back at the usual markets mid July provided the garden has enough produce in it!

I’ll try keep you all posted on stories or another post on the progress!

Wish us luck tomorrow!!
