The Border Guard Bangladesh-BGB Secures Release of Fourteen Fishermen Detained by Arakan Army-AA After Lengthy Humanitarian Negotiations Along Naf River Border

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has secured the release of 14 fishermen who were detained by the Arakan Army in the Bay of Bengal after reportedly crossing into Myanmar waters while fishing. The group, consisting of 13 Bangladeshi nationals and one Forcibly Displaced Myanmar National (FDMN), commonly known as a Rohingya, was handed over to BGB officials at the Naf River zero line on May 9 before being transported to the Teknaf jetty.

According to BGB sources, the fishermen were arrested between 2025 and 2026 after their fishing boats unintentionally entered Myanmar territorial waters. Following their detention, the fishermen were reportedly held in different camps controlled by the Arakan Army inside Myanmar. Officials stated that the BGB’s Cox’s Bazar Region later initiated communication with the Arakan Army on humanitarian grounds to negotiate their release and safe return to Bangladesh.

The Commander of Teknaf Battalion (2nd BGB), Lieutenant Colonel Md. Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan, said the successful release reflected the professionalism and sincere humanitarian efforts of the border force. He stated that BGB remains committed to protecting people’s lives and property while maintaining security along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border area amid continuing regional tensions and cross-border concerns affecting local fishing communities.

The authorities said the released fishermen are currently undergoing identity verification by local administration and law enforcement agencies before being reunited with their families. BGB officials added that efforts and discussions are continuing to secure the safe and quick return of other detainees who are still believed to be held inside Myanmar. The incident highlights ongoing risks faced by fishermen operating near the sensitive maritime border region.
