Just four days before Eid-ul-Adha, an incident allegedly took place in Bashgari, Raipura, Narsingdi, where a young man was reportedly abducted at gunpoint, and Tk 500,000 was extorted from his family. A motorcycle was also allegedly taken. Accusations have been made against an alleged local criminal known as "Chhoto Rubel."
According to reports, Md. Anik Sheikh, a resident of Keranir Tek area of Himardigi, Tongi, had gone to the Bashgari area with his friends on a motorcycle before Eid.
It is alleged that a group of youths suddenly appeared, held him at gunpoint, blindfolded him, and took him away along with his motorcycle. He claims that he was detained for two days and subjected to inhumane torture.
Later, the alleged abductors contacted his family by phone and demanded ransom, threatening to kill him if the money was not paid.
According to the victim's allegations, through threats and continuous torture, the group extorted Tk 500,000 from his family. They also allegedly kept his Yamaha R15 motorcycle (Registration No. Dhaka Metro-L 71-8626).
It has further been alleged that Chhoto Rubel and his associates openly display fi****ms, illegally occupy land, and detain people to extort money from them.
When journalists visited the Bashgari area on Tuesday, a passerby named Md. Hasim reportedly told them that Chhoto Rubel openly carries fi****ms and attends various village events, creating fear among local residents. He further claimed that anyone who speaks out against him is allegedly abducted, tortured, and forced to pay ransom. As a result, many people are afraid to speak against him.
Reports on allegations regarding Chhoto Rubel's alleged armed activities and acts of torture are expected to be presented in a seven-part series.
When journalists contacted Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Mr. Sujan Chandra Sarkar for comment, he requested information about the matter. After journalists reportedly sent him a photograph allegedly showing Chhoto Rubel displaying fi****ms, he stated:
"No one is above the law, regardless of who commits a crime. Under the direction of the Honorable Superintendent of Police, we will investigate the matter and take legal action against anyone found responsible."
When contacted by phone, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Raipura Police Station told journalists that the matter would be investigated and that legal action would be taken promptly if warranted.
