A follower recently reached out and asked a great question:
“When do I stop feeding my bees?”
This is such an important topic as we prep our colonies for the colder months ahead!

🐝How much food do they need?
In cold climates like Newfoundland, bees need about 60 to 90 lbs of stored honey or syrup to survive our long, wet, and windy winters. If a hive feels light when you give it a lift test, they definitely need more feed!

🐝What type of feed to use?
-Fall (above 10°C / 50°F): Feed 2:1 sugar syrup. This thicker ratio makes it much easier for the bees to store and cap quickly before it gets too chilly.
-Late fall / winter (below 10°C / 50°F): Stop liquid feeding altogether. Bees can’t process liquid syrup when temperatures drop. At this point, switch to fondant, sugar bricks, or candy boards placed right inside the hive.

🐝Why switch to solid feed?
Liquid feed in cold weather can easily chill the cluster and cause unwanted moisture problems inside the hive. Solid feed gives them a safe emergency food source without adding any extra dampness.

🐝When to stop feeding completely?
Once all the frames are filled and capped, and the hive feels satisfyingly heavy with stores, your bees are officially set for winter. Just remember to do the lift test again in late winter—if a hive starts feeling light, drop in some more fondant or sugar bricks to prevent starvation!
