Humble Beginnings

The 60’x60’ plot pictured above delivered most of the root vegetables, a whole lot of salads and juicing greens and some of the herbs that fed our family in 2017. It also provided many of the same to family, friends and neighbours. It’s a joy to work in the dirt. It’s a wholesome feeling. And at the end of the day, when you’re watching that muddy water circling the shower drain, it’s a satisfying feeling - that you did something good in the world.

But something good can always be turned into something better. With help from a neighbour and a host of friends & their families, we expanded our worked garden from that humble little 60x60 plot to include three more plots - two 50x50 plots and a 40x100 field. We grew tomatoes (roma, slicers and cherry), zucchini, butternut squash, buttercup squash, spagghetti squash, cabbages, onions, shallots, peppers, eggplant, endives, mesclun mix, romaine, curly kale, tuscan kale, fordhook giant chard, rainbow chard, cucumbers, and some weird looking pumpkin/squash things (best to just look at it as a ‘gift’). We shared that bounty with our daughter @farmcitygirl who sold it at her table in Milton, and with the neighbours, friends and families who helped make it happen.

2018 marks the launch of Herbal Howlett. A farm that has demonstrated that we can put food on our table AND share with many others. To that end, we are starting a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) offering in 2018. And we plan to operate a farmgate stall. And we will have a presence at the Tillsonburg Farmers Market every Saturday morning from May to November. Additionally, @farmcitygirl plans to host our produce at the large and busy Milton Farmers Market on Saturday mornings from May until October. All this activity means that FRIDAY will be a very busy day for us - picking, sorting, washing, packing for Saturday markets.

The CSA program will be detailed in a separate post, but essentially will include a box of produce weekly for $500 over the 20-week summer harvest period. To keep it manageable and sustainable, only ten CSA summer shares will be available in 2018. But if you still want produce in a box, we will be online soon, and you can order & pay for produce and have it delivered to your door. Just watch for our news on that one.
