Imagine a small kitchen in Benue, Nigeria.
The smoky, spicy scent of jollof rice bubbles on the stove.
Beef kebabs—threaded with green peppers, onions, and tomatoes—sizzle in the air.
As a child, I’d linger nearby, watching my mother’s hands move with quiet grace.
She wasn’t just cooking for us.
She was pouring love into every dish, making enough to share with every neighbor on our street.
That’s my earliest memory of her—and the heart of this Mother’s Day story I want to share with you.
Before she touched a single spice, she’d pause and pray.
When I asked why, she smiled. “I’m asking for something special to come through,” she said.
That was her ritual—her way of turning simple ingredients, like vegetables from her garden or pantry scraps, into meals that felt like home.
Nothing was wasted. No moment rushed.
Her food was always more than the sum of its parts.
When I left for university, I felt the weight of her absence.
It wasn’t just her cooking I missed—it was the care behind it.
That’s when I discovered fonio in the vibrant markets of Plateau State, Nigeria.
Among the Berom people, I saw tiny grains sparking big change:
Lifting women farmers out of poverty.
Nourishing students like me with simple porridge.
And offering health benefits I’d soon come to cherish.
Fonio became my morning rhythm—humble, sustaining, and somehow familiar, like my mother’s meals.
Years later, when my mother faced her own diabetes, I knew one heritage grain could help.
Fonio, with its low glycemic index, became my gift to her during the holidays.
I’d bring it home, and we’d cook together, blending her wisdom with this new tradition.
It wasn’t just about managing her condition.
It was about nourishing her the way she’d always nourished me.
That spirit of care, rooted in love, inspired me to start WiseGrown.
Not to chase trends, but to honor nourishment with meaning.
Fonio is part of that story—light, versatile, sustainable, and deeply tied to our roots.
It carries my mother’s values: dignity, care, and quiet excellence.
This Mother’s Day, I celebrate her.
And every mother who does more than feed us—who enriches us with strength, presence, and love.
Join me in honoring them with food that nourishes body and soul.
With gratitude,
Michael Adekanye
