A Visit to Longview Farms

Moss Street staff recently had the opportunity to visit Longview Farms in Central Saanich, one of Vancouver Island’s largest certified organic vegetable farms. Thank you to Charly, Julia, and Michael for the tour.

With more than 165 acres of certified organic land and 3.5 acres of greenhouses, Longview is an important part of our local food system. It was interesting to hear about how the farm's scale influences what they grow. For example, because ripe organic strawberries have a limited shelf life of only a couple of days, Longview's labour pool allows them to grow more of the crop, starting hand-picking at 4:30am(!!) to bring to market. And squash is well suited to Longview because they have both the land to grow it in quantity and the space to store it. Longview’s extensive cooler and storage facilities also allow the farm to handle produce efficiently. For restaurants and retailers, they use a “harvest-to-order” model, picking according to customer orders and delivering twice a week. Longview's greenhouses extend and diversify production year-round as they continue to refine climate-control systems and learn which crops perform best, with plans to expand production of crops such as tomatoes.

Our visit also highlighted Longview’s commitment to organic farming practices and focus on sustainable production, soil health, and long-term food security. Crop rotation, cover cropping, natural pest management, soil regeneration, and water conservation are all part of an operation designed to produce food at scale while caring for the land. It is clear that a great deal of thought and care goes into both what they grow and how they grow it, and we look forward to sharing more of their harvest with our market community.

Have you ever noticed how so many grocery store tomatoes have no flavour 😤 well maybe it's time you tried organic farms tomatoes! They are fresh and they even have a longer shelf life than store bought! 💫
