🐖 Early Signs of Pregnancy in Pigs: How to Know If Your Sow Is Truly Expecting
One thing almost every pig farmer has experienced is this:
You mate your sow… 3 weeks later she starts looking “different”…
And you begin asking yourself:
👉 “Is she pregnant… or am I just assuming?”
The good news?
Your sow will ALWAYS give early signs, if you know what to look for.
Let’s break it down in a simple and practical way. 👇
1️⃣ She Doesn’t Return to Heat (21 Days After Mating)
This is the number one and most reliable early sign.
A sow that is pregnant will NOT:
❌ Stand for the boar
❌ Show swollen, bright red v***a
❌ Become restless or noisy
❌ Mount other pigs
Instead, she stays calm.
If she passes 21 days with no heat signs, pregnancy is very likely.
2️⃣ Ni***es Become Bigger and More Visible
Within 2–3 weeks after successful mating, you’ll notice:
✔ Teats becoming slightly longer
✔ Pinkish or brighter in color
✔ The udder area looking fuller
This is the body preparing for milk much later, but it starts early.
3️⃣ She Becomes Calmer or Sleeps More
Pregnant sows often have a change in behavior:
✔ More relaxed
✔ Less active
✔ Eats quietly
✔ Less aggressive
Her body is conserving energy for the developing embryos.
4️⃣ Increased Appetite (Sometimes Too Much!)
If your sow suddenly begins to:
✔ Eat more
✔ Finish feed faster
✔ Search for extra feed
✔ Look more “satisfied” after meals
…it’s another early sign she may be pregnant.
Her body demands more nutrients as the embryos start forming.
5️⃣ Body Shape Begins to Change Around Week 3–4
This is not the big round “pregnancy belly” yet, but subtle changes like:
✔ Slight widening of the abdomen
✔ A more relaxed belly line
✔ A “fuller” look even if she’s not fat
These early body changes are easy to miss unless you observe closely.
6️⃣ The Sow Becomes More Gentle (Most Times)
Many farmers report that pregnant sows tend to:
✔ Show less aggression
✔ Allow you to touch or inspect them
✔ Become more friendly
A sow in heat is restless; a pregnant sow is calm and steady.
7️⃣ Vaginal Changes (Subtle But Helpful)
Right after mating:
✔ V***a becomes slightly swollen
✔ Then slowly goes back to normal
✔ No signs of redness or wetness around heat date
If the v***a becomes red again 18–21 days later, she is NOT pregnant.
8️⃣ Personality Shift (The Sign New Farmers Miss!)
Some sows change personality when pregnant:
✔ A normally aggressive sow becomes gentle
✔ A quiet sow becomes more reserved
✔ A hungry sow becomes extra hungry
This behavior shift is one of the earliest signs, but you must know your pigs’ usual behavior to notice it.
🔥 Final Reminder
A sow doesn’t just “look pregnant.”
She acts pregnant.
She eats like a pregnant sow.
She moves differently.
And most importantly…
👉 She DOES NOT return to heat after 21 days.
If you watch closely, your sow will tell you everything.
