Serge Espoir Matomba Calls for Stronger African Military and Strategic Unity
Cameroonian political leader Serge Espoir Matomba has called on African countries to strengthen their military capabilities and rethink their security strategies in a rapidly changing world.
In a statement, Matomba said Africa can no longer remain passive in global affairs.
“The world is changing rapidly, and Africa can no longer afford to be a spectator of history,” he said.
He pointed to past international interventions that were justified by claims later questioned, including the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the 2011 intervention in Libya.
“In Iraq, the intervention against Saddam Hussein was justified by the alleged existence of weapons of mass destruction. Yet, to this day, no trace of such weapons has been found,” Matomba said.
He also cited Libya as an example where intervention was presented as protecting civilians and promoting democracy.
“These examples demonstrate that, in international relations, decisions are often complex, and the justifications offered can be challenged.”
Matomba said African countries must reflect on their ability to defend their sovereignty and ensure their own security.
“This is not about seeking confrontation but rather about being aware of the realities of the world and preparing to defend our states if necessary.”
He also raised concerns about the role of foreign military bases on the African continent, questioning whether they truly serve the interests of host countries.
“Foreign military bases, security alliances, and strategic partnerships must always be assessed through a single lens: do they truly serve the security and independence of our peoples?”
Matomba called for stronger African cooperation, better-trained and better-equipped armies, and a shared strategic vision for the continent.
“The time has come for Africa to think about its security by itself and for itself,” he said.
He concluded by urging African leaders to learn from global crises and organize the continent’s security architecture based on sovereignty, dignity, and unity.
