CHAPTER 6: Revival
After the revelation, Pastor Emmanuel's demeanor changed. He no longer pandered to Rachel's whims, instead standing firm in his convictions. At home, their conversations turned tense as he spoke truth to power, refusing to compromise his message for her approval.
In church, Pastor Emmanuel's sermons took on a new level of passion and conviction. He preached with authority, unapologetic about the truths he shared. The congregation responded, and Zoey found herself drawn to the ministry like never before.
As she attended more services, Zoey discovered a depth to Pastor Emmanuel's character she hadn't seen before. She realized he wasn't a hypocrite, but a man committed to his faith and calling. Her admiration turned to devotion, and she became an active member of the church by joining the evangelism department and also she became actively in charge of the youth ministry. As she drew Clo to pastor Emmanuel, she got to know him better and found out more about the principles he upholds. She was always on a mutual ground with mama Rachel they never became close and their bond was never strong. There was nothing special about Zoey in the eyes of Mama Rachel she was just like any other member in church.
Rachel, however, grew increasingly agitated. She felt Pastor Emmanuel's newfound assertiveness as a personal attack, and their marriage suffered. The tension between them was palpable, with Rachel's anger and frustration boiling over into arguments.
Despite the challenges, Pastor Emmanuel remained resolute. He knew he couldn't compromise his calling, no matter the cost. But the cost was high. At home, Rachel's behavior made life unbearable. Sleepless nights followed heated arguments, and Pastor Emmanuel often found himself seeking refuge in the church.
Some nights, exhaustion forced him to sleep in the church office, rather than face the turmoil at home. It was a difficult path, but he refused to abandon his calling. The question was, how long could he endure the strain on his marriage and personal life.
The tension between Pastor Emmanuel and Rachel had been building for weeks, but tonight it erupted into a fierce argument. Rachel's anger and frustration boiled over as she confronted him in their living room after service on a Wednesday.
"You're killing the church, Emmanuel!" Rachel's voice was shrill, her eyes blazing with fury. "The influential people are leaving, the seeds aren't as high as they used to be... what's happening to you? Have you lost sight of our vision?"
Pastor Emmanuel stood firm, his jaw set in determination. "I'm preaching the truth, Rachel. I'm not going to compromise God's word for the sake of growth or money. We can't build our ministry on lies and manipulation."
Rachel's face twisted in disgust. "You're being stubborn and foolish. We have bills to pay, a reputation to maintain... do you think God wants us to suffer because of your convictions? You're throwing away everything we've worked for."
"I'm not throwing anything away," Pastor Emmanuel replied, his voice calm but firm. "I'm standing for what God has called me to do. If people leave because they're not hungry for the truth, then maybe they're not the kind of people we should be reaching out to."
Rachel's anger turned to venom. "You're so self-righteous, Emmanuel. You think you're the only one who knows what's best for this church? I'm your wife, your partner... don't I have a say in this?"
"You're my wife, but you're not my spiritual leader," Pastor Emmanuel said, his words cutting. "God is my leader, and I'm following Him, not you."
The argument escalated, with both sides refusing to yield. Rachel's words cut deep, but Pastor Emmanuel wouldn't budge. He knew he was standing for what was right.
"You're so focused on your calling that you've forgotten about our family," Rachel spat. "Our marriage is suffering, and you don't even care."
"My calling is not just about me," Pastor Emmanuel replied, his voice rising. "It's about serving God and His people. If our marriage is suffering, it's because you're not supporting me in what God has called me to do."
In a fit of rage, Rachel's hand flew across Pastor Emmanuel's face, the slap echoing through the room. The shock and pain were immediate, but Pastor Emmanuel's expression remained resolute.
Without a word, he turned and walked out of the house, the cool night air a welcome respite from the tension. He made his way to the church, seeking refuge in the familiar surroundings.
As he sat in his office, the silence and stillness enveloped him, a stark contrast to the turmoil at home. Pastor Emmanuel felt a mix of emotions: sadness, frustration, and a deep sense of resolve. He knew he'd made the right decision, but the cost was higher than he'd anticipated.
As Pastor Emmanuel sat in his office, lost in thought, the silence was broken by a faint rustling sound coming from the church hall. His curiosity piqued, he rose from his chair and walked towards the hall, his footsteps echoing through the empty corridors.
As he entered the hall, he was met with a sight that touched his heart. Zoey sat alone, surrounded by open Bibles, notebooks, and scattered papers. Her eyes were fixed intently on the scriptures, her face illuminated only by the soft glow of the overhead lights.
Pastor Emmanuel's face softened with a gentle smile as he approached her. "Zoey, what brings you here tonight?" he asked, his voice low and soothing, breaking the silence.
Zoey looked up, her eyes locking onto Pastor Emmanuel's, and for a moment, they just stared at each other. "I've been praying and fasting for my family, sir," she replied, her voice filled with conviction, her words barely above a whisper. "My parents have been arguing a lot, and I want God to grant them understanding."
Pastor Emmanuel nodded, his expression filled with empathy. "That's a noble endeavor, Zoey. Hold tight to God; He's faithful." He paused, studying her determined face. "How long have you been fasting and praying?"
Zoey hesitated for a moment before answering, "Since Monday, sir. I plan to continue until I feel a breakthrough."
As they spoke, Zoey couldn't help but notice the weariness etched on Pastor Emmanuel's face. His eyes, usually bright and encouraging, seemed clouded with tears, and his usual confidence seemed shaken. She sensed that something was amiss, but she didn't feel comfortable probing further.
Pastor Emmanuel, too, was taken aback by Zoey’s dedication. He felt a sense of comfort in her presence, a reminder that he wasn't alone in his struggles. For a brief moment, their shared burdens seemed to bridge the gap between them, and he felt a sense of connection he hadn't felt in a long time.
As they parted ways, Pastor Emmanuel returned to his office, feeling a sense of hope he hadn't felt in days. Maybe, just maybe, this chance encounter would be the catalyst for a deeper connection with Zoey– and a renewed sense of purpose for himself. He sat back in his chair, his eyes fixed on the door, wondering what other surprises the night might hold. ***
The next morning, Zoey got to school and taught her classes with her usual enthusiasm. When lunchtime rolled around, she met up with her friend Glory at the canteen. As they sat down with their meals, Zoey turned to Glory with heartfelt gratitude.
"I'm so glad you encouraged me to give Shepherd's Assembly another chance," she said, her eyes shining with sincerity. "I was on the verge of giving up, but your words stuck with me. Now, I feel like I'm exactly where I'm meant to be."
Glory smiled warmly, her expression reflecting her genuine happiness for Zoey. "I knew you'd see it," she said. "Pastor Emmanuel's messages are powerful, and the community there is amazing. You've found your tribe, Zoey."
Zoey nodded enthusiastically, her face lighting up with excitement. "I love Pastor Emmanuel's sermons. He's so passionate about the gospel, and it resonates with me." She paused, her expression turning serious. "But yesterday, I saw him in church, and he didn't seem alright. He looked troubled, like something was weighing heavily on his mind."
Glory's expression turned thoughtful, her brow furrowed in concern. "Sometimes men of God go through their own struggles, their own 'wahalas,' that they can't really share. People are looking up to them, so they have to maintain a certain image."
Zoey's heart went out to Pastor Emmanuel. She couldn't imagine what he might be going through. "I feel so sad for him," she said softly. "What could be troubling him so much? He's such a wonderful pastor, and his heart for God is evident in everything he does."
Glory nodded in agreement. "He's an amazing pastor, and we're all blessed to have him."
Without another word, the two friends joined hands, and Zoey initiated a silent prayer for Pastor Emmanuel. Glory followed suit, her eyes closed in reverence. The canteen's bustling atmosphere faded into the background as they prayed, their focus solely on lifting Pastor Emmanuel up to God.
After they finished praying, Glory spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper. "I hope it's not marital issues." Zoey shook her head, her expression thoughtful. "I don't think it can’t be. Mummy Rachel seems like a supportive wife. They're always smiling and affectionate with each other."
Glory raised an eyebrow, a hint of skepticism in her expression. "You never can tell what's going on behind closed doors. You can't boast that a marriage is perfect until you're in that marriage." She paused, then waved her hand dismissively. "But who am I to speculate?"
As they finished their lunch, Zoey couldn't shake off the feeling that Pastor Emmanuel needed their prayers more than ever. She hoped that God would soon intervene and bring him peace, lifting the burdens that weighed him down. "Let's keep praying for him," she said to Glory. "I feel like he needs our support now ” Glory nodded in agreement.
