These savory meatballs are typically made with ground beef or lamb, mixed with a variety of herbs and spices to create a flavorful and aromatic dish. They are often served as an appetizer or main course, accompanied by a side of tzatziki sauce or a fresh Greek salad.

The key to making the perfect Greek meatball lies in the quality of the ingredients used and the method of preparation. The meat is typically seasoned with a mixture of herbs such as oregano, mint, and parsley, as well as spices like cumin, cinnamon, and garlic. Once the meat mixture is formed into small balls, they are either baked in the oven or fried in a skillet until golden brown and cooked through. Greek coffee frappe is a beloved drink in Greece that has become popular worldwide. It is made with strong Greek coffee, sugar, and water, which are mixed together to create a frothy and refreshing beverage. The key to a good frappe is the foam that forms on top, which gives it a creamy texture and a delightful taste.

One of the reasons why Greek coffee frappe is so popular is its versatility. It can be enjoyed hot or cold, depending on the weather and personal preference. In the hot summer months, nothing beats the cool and invigorating taste of an iced frappe, while in the winter, a steaming hot cup of Greek coffee frappe can warm you up and provide a comforting pick-me-up.

Another reason for the popularity of Greek coffee frappe is its unique flavor profile. The strong and robust taste of Greek coffee pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the sugar, creating a balanced and delicious beverage. The foam on top adds a creamy texture that enhances the overall drinking experience.

Whether you are sipping on a Greek coffee frappe at a bustling cafe in Athens or making one at home, you can appreciate the rich tradition and cultural significance of this beloved beverage. It is not just a drink, but a symbol of Greek hospitality and the joy of sharing a moment with loved ones. So next time you are in need of a refreshing and satisfying pick-me-up, consider treating yourself to a delicious Greek coffee frappe.

Why do Greeks make vasilopita?

Vasilopita is a traditional Greek cake served at midnight on New Year's Eve to celebrate the life of Saint Basil. After baking the cake, a coin is inserted through the base and when cut the person who finds the coin is said to be granted luck for the rest of the year!

The Greek word Vasilopita is directly translated as “Sweet Bread of Basil”. When the Vasilopita is prepared, a coin is baked into the ingredients and sweet flavoring is added to the bread which symbolises the eternal sweetness and joy of life.

Greek New years tradition.
In honor of both the New Year and St. Basil's day, Greeks bake a coin into a New Year's cake called a “Vasilopita.” The delicious cake is sliced up and served. The first cut goes to Jesus, and then the rest to the family – Greeks even cut slices for family members who are not present, as well as one for “the house.”

What the ancient Greeks named the cake.
The ancient Greeks made cakes called plakous (from the word for "flat"), they might have reminded you a little bit of today's baklava. Plakous were flat and made from eggs, milk, nuts and honey. The Romans made a similar cake named placenta, and to the Romans placenta was a cake fit for the gods!

Putting a coin in the Vasilopita.

The coin is to symbolize the gold and jewels in the original story of the Vasilopita.
A gold (nowadays wrapped in aluminium foil), coin known as the flouri is baked into the bread during its preparation. The individual who receives the slice containing the coin is said to be blessed with good luck in the new year!
