The whole project was initially funded by a Bags for Change grant by TESCO with huge amounts of labour provided by parents. Tesco has teamed up with greenspace scotland to launch its Bags of Help initiative across
Scotland. The scheme will see three community groups and projects awarded grants of
£12,000, £10,000 and £8,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge. Bags of Help offers community group
s and projects in each of Tesco’s regions across the UK a share of revenue generated from the five pence charge levied on single-use carrier bags. We had submitted a proposal to turn the waste ground behind Milngavie Nursery, surrounding the football pitch, into a Community Orchard. This would be a wonderful resource for both the school and nursery, allowing opportunities for our children to experience growing their own fruit and harvesting natural, organic food. It would also provide a beautiful place to play and to picnic. Our vision includes a polytunnel for growing on our seedlings, soft fruit bushes and heritage, dwarfed fruit trees, as well as bee hives and wild flower meadow. We are looking for volunteers to help us and be part of a project which leaves a lasting legacy for our community.
