Re-Post & Update :

We were pleased to hear this week that our vending machines have now been built and are finding their way from Italy to Devon very soon. Fingers crossed we are hoping that our new veg shed will be up and running by the end of June/early July. We are looking forward to supplying you with our own Dexter beef and pork from Terawhiti Farm to compliment our lovely veg !

Re-Post From 3rd April :

As many of you will know our farm and family have been growing veg here since the early 1900's ... five generations.

During the 2020 Covid pandemic, we were approached by our own village to supply families with veg to avoid stepping foot into a supermarket. Everyone would place their order, and we dropped the produce at the village hall once a week for collection. This worked really well and the village were very grateful.

This soon expanded as word grew in the Kingsbridge community and we started to do a weekly veg box scheme from our farm, where orders were placed and boxes collected directly from us.

When we all came out of lockdown and life returned to normal, everyone still wanted our veg which was fantastic! But unfortunately we just didn't have the time to continue making up boxes. So that is when our honesty Veg Shed was born on Terawhiti Farm. It enabled us to supply you with our lovely veg, but it didn't require lots of man-hours on our part to do so.

The Veg Shed has grown in popularity and now we move to the next stage.

For anyone that visits the farm regularly, you will have noticed that we have moved our shipping containers in the yard and in their place we have built a new Veg Shed. This is safer for our customers as it is out of the way of our busy yard where vans and tractors come and go on a regular basis.

Following an on-going request from our regular customers, from approximately June, we will be supplying our own farm reared beef and pork from a frozen vending machine within the new veg shed. There will also be a refrigerated vending machine for our fresh produce and eggs.

Both machines will have card and cash terminals, and as always, the Veg Shed will be open 24/7 for your convenience when other shops are shut.

Having run the Veg Shed for a number of years now, we do realise what a service it provides the local community, it is always open, it is so convenient and there is a demand for it. It is not unusual for people to pop in on Christmas day or at ten o'clock at night. Living in the sticks like we all do, these little pop-up veg sheds are worth their weight in gold to everyone.

We will also have a community noticeboard within the shed where you are welcome to advertise local events and classes which need promoting! Just pop it on the board, no need to ask!

So we hope you will all continue to use our new and improved veg shed when it is fully up and running. The vending machines themselves aren't due to be installed until about June, so there is a slight wait for them.

In a world of immense insecurity, it is really important that we all have food security and that will only happen by supporting your local farmers and by supporting British farmers. Thank you 🙏

The demand for eggs is nationally surging. Not quite sure why, but maybe because they are a good source of protein and a fast food that is healthy 🤷‍♀️. Whatever the reason our girls can't keep up with the demand from our veg shed, so we have adopted some new recruits who arrived yesterday. Another thirty from Launceton who will be free to roam the paddock in a few days time. When introducing new girls to an already established flock, it has to be done gradually for the good of the new arrivals who will quite frankly be beaten up by the old girls if not done carefully and properly. So they will remain cooped up for a few days until introductions have been made in a civilised manner, and then they can be released and will be free to roam forever. The newbies are already settled and happy and have popped out a few eggs today. Geoffrey, our cockerel, couldn't resist defecting from the old girls and sneaking into the young pullets at dawn this morning. Naughty Geoffrey. Caught in the act 🙄

Did you know that this time of year is called the "hungry season". If you buy your vegetables from the supermarket, this may escape you. But for English vegetable producers, we are now in between seasons. So our winter vegetables here on the farm, have virtually finished. But the conveyor of produce has now stopped. Ten days ago we started planting our summer vegetables, but there's now a gap of several weeks before they will be ready to harvest. So farmers and fresh produce wholesalers call it the "hungry season" - where the staple English vegetables are in short supply.

The first English broccoli and tender stem will be available from June onwards 👍

Just sharing our new little Dexter calves. We don't really do calving and have just a handful of "Mum's to be", so for us it's extra special and lovely to see the miracle of birth and new life.

The little calf at the front was born on Monday , and the other two (one is hiding) are about four hours old.

The mum's are very protective of their young and get VERY cross if you get too close. This does cause us problems if there is a problem with the calf and it needs our intervention.

We still have a few more which we hope are in calf and so will see what the next few days bring.

As vegetable growers, there's nothing more infuriating than seeing foreign veg on the shelves of supermarkets when we have acres of it growing just down the road 🙄

And look at all that plastic in Almeria 😱 unfortunately that's not disposed of in an environmentally friendly fashion either 😡

🥕UK supermarkets now rely heavily on staple fruit and vegetables grown in North Africa, southern Europe and further a field— and the numbers, and consequences, are stark.

📊 Around 80% of fruit and over 45% of vegetables consumed in the UK are imported (DEFRA food supply statistics). A significant share comes from Spain, with Almería — home to the vast “sea of plastic” greenhouses — playing a central role in supplying tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and salads to UK supermarkets year-round.

💧 Almería is one of the most water-stressed regions in Europe. Intensive horticulture there relies heavily on groundwater abstraction, desalination and long-distance water transfers. Studies show chronic aquifer depletion, rising salinity and ecosystem damage, driven by export-focused vegetable production (Spanish government and EU water framework reporting).

✈️ Imports from Morocco have more than doubled over the past decade (HMRC trade data), again supplying crops that can be grown reliably in the UK, including salads, carrots, onions and brassicas.

🥔This is not about trade — it is about supermarket sourcing choices.

🥦While British growers face tighter environmental rules and rising costs, supermarkets are shifting supply to regions already under severe environmental pressure, exporting the impacts while undermining domestic production.

🍄‍🟫Every imported pallet weakens UK growers, reduces food resilience, and deepens environmental harm overseas.

🥬UK food security — and genuine sustainability — starts on British farms, not in water-stressed export zones.

This is shocking and embarrassing 🤦‍♀️

Why does the UK give so little regard to what it is eating 🤷‍♀️

Healthy eating doesn't have to be expensive, but maybe it does require more effort than pealing back the cellophane.

We are swamped with easy healthy eating recipes across social media, yet they are published largely in vain.

Aim to have a fridge full of healthy fresh locally grown veg as a start to your healthy eating regime of 2026.

Aim for an "ingredients" fridge, not a fridge full of processed, ready to eat food.

It's not that difficult, but it does require a bit more effort and thought, but not necessarily a heap of time if you cook wisely.

Our veg shed is open 24/7 to start you off :

I wanted to share this map with everyone again because it's so important. Every time I look at it, it reminds me exactly why I do what I do.

The UK sits alone in red, the only European country where more than half of household food purchases are ultra-processed. We've become the unhealthiest nation in Europe, and it's not because we lack willpower or discipline. It's because our food system is broken.

Think about it. Portugal manages just 10.2%. Italy sits at 13.4%. France at 14.2%. These countries haven't discovered some magical secret. They've simply held onto something we've lost: a culture of real food, cooked from scratch, shared with family and friends. Meanwhile, we've handed our health over to food manufacturers who care more about profit margins than our wellbeing.

I'm not interested in pointing fingers at individuals. This isn't your fault. For decades, the food industry has spent billions engineering products designed to make you eat more, buy more, crave more. They've stripped the fibre out, pumped the sugar in, and marketed it all as convenient, affordable, and perfectly acceptable. They've captured our taste buds, hijacked our metabolism, and left us wondering why we can't shift the weight or find the energy we used to have.

But we can turn this around. Not through government mandates or another failed public health campaign, but through a grassroots movement of people who refuse to accept this as normal anymore.

So the strawberries have all been planted this week ✅️ An everbearer variety which means it will give us two crops in one season, as opposed to a sixty day variety which produces just one crop.

These will be watered and fed four times a day, and we will start picking in May.

When ready, the strawberries will be available to purchase from our veg shed of course 😊😋🍓
