One area that often gets overlooked is metabolic health.

Fertility is an energy-intensive process. Ovulation, egg quality, implantation and pregnancy all require the body to feel safe, nourished and resourced.

Sometimes the drivers aren’t obvious. We commonly see patterns linked to long-term stress, poor sleep, under-eating, shift work, overtraining, insulin resistance, and reduced energy availability.

This is why fertility conversations need to go beyond hormones alone.

If you’ve been trying to conceive and feel like you’re not getting answers, it may be time to look a little deeper.

Mel works with women experiencing unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriage, IVF challenges and complex fertility cases to uncover the factors that may be getting missed.

Every cold, every virus, every bug that went through daycare seemed to make its way through the whole household.

The dad was constantly taking sick days. The kids were always unwell. The family stopped attending social events because they were worried about bringing home the next illness.

When they came to see Jess, we focused on building resilience.

Not just treating the latest cold, but supporting the immune system so their bodies could better handle what life was throwing at them.

Fast forward a few months and things looked very different.

The dad was back at work consistently. The kids were thriving at daycare. The family was getting back to living their lives.

If it feels like your family is stuck in a cycle of constant illness, know that it’s not always something you simply have to wait out.

Sometimes the right support can make all the difference.

Start with a free discovery call with Jess and let’s see how we can help your family thrive this winter.

Everyone wants to talk about supplements, egg quality and the latest fertility trends.

But if you’re tossing and turning all night, waking exhausted every morning and running on caffeine to get through the day, there’s a good chance you’re skipping one of the most important fertility foundations.

In this clip from Episode 8, Jaime and Mel discuss why sleep quality matters for hormones, metabolism, ovulation and reproductive health, and why we often start here before moving on to more advanced strategies.

Because sometimes the next step in fertility isn’t another supplement.

It’s getting back to the basics.

🎙️ Episode 8, our final episode of Season 1, drops next Tuesday on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts.

One of the most overlooked symptoms of perimenopause is a sudden change in va**nal and urinary health.

As oestrogen begins to fluctuate, the tissues of the va**na and urinary tract can become thinner, drier and more vulnerable. The va**nal microbiome can also shift, reducing the protective Lactobacillus species that help keep infections at bay.

The result?

• More frequent UTIs
• Burning and urgency
• Increased irritation
• Symptoms that seem to appear out of nowhere

If you’ve never struggled with UTIs before and now they’re becoming a regular issue, it may be worth looking beyond the infection itself and exploring what’s changing hormonally.

Toni helps women understand the bigger picture of perimenopause and menopause, looking at hormones, va**nal health, microbiome balance, stress, inflammation and overall wellbeing.

Anxiety is one of the most overlooked symptoms of endometriosis.

Many women notice their anxiety becomes worse before their period, around ovulation, or during an endometriosis flare, but never realise there may be a physiological reason behind it.

Endometriosis is associated with chronic inflammation, altered immune function, histamine dysregulation and changes in hormone signalling. All of these can influence mood, anxiety and how resilient you feel emotionally.

This is why anxiety in endometriosis isn’t always “just stress.”

If you’ve ever felt like your mental health changes with your cycle, you’re not imagining it.

Understanding the connection is often the first step towards getting the right support.

Mel works with women experiencing endometriosis, painful periods, fertility challenges and hormone-related symptoms every day.

One of the biggest misconceptions I see is women believing their hormones were “fixed” because their periods became regular, their skin cleared up, or their symptoms improved while on the pill.

But the pill works by suppressing ovulation.

That means many of the symptoms that seemed to disappear were often being masked, not necessarily resolved.

This is why so many women are shocked when they come off the pill and suddenly experience irregular cycles, acne, heavy periods, painful periods, or symptoms that feel worse than before.

I’m not anti-pill. Every woman deserves to choose the contraception that’s right for her.

What I am passionate about is helping women understand what is happening underneath the surface so they can make informed decisions about their health.

If you’re thinking about coming off the pill, or you’ve already come off and your hormones feel completely out of balance, there are often underlying drivers that need support.

At Nourishing Apothecary, this is exactly what we help women investigate every day.

This might upset some practitioners, but after almost 30 years of combined clinical experience, Mel and I have found that a thorough case history often tells us far more than an expensive hormone test.

Your cycle length.
Whether you’re ovulating.
Spotting before your period.
Period pain.
Heavy bleeding.
Mood changes.
Sleep patterns.
Energy fluctuations.

These patterns give us clues that no single test can capture.

That’s not because testing is bad. We use pathology and investigations every day when they’re clinically appropriate. But hormones are dynamic, and a test is only ever a snapshot in time. The bigger picture is often found in your symptoms, your history and the patterns we see repeated across thousands of consultations.

One of the greatest advantages of working with experienced practitioners is pattern recognition. When you do this every day, you start to recognise the common threads that connect seemingly unrelated symptoms.

And perhaps most importantly, if you’re struggling with hormone symptoms, you’re probably not the only one. We see these patterns every single week and helping women make sense of them is what we love to do.

Losing a pregnancy once is heartbreakingly common. But after multiple losses, it’s important to ask why.

What Mel sees far too often are women being reassured that everything is “normal” because they can get pregnant, while key areas have never been properly investigated.

Implantation and staying pregnant are not the same thing.

Thyroid health, immune factors, clotting markers, inflammation, nutrient status, s***m DNA fragmentation, endometriosis, metabolic health and more can all play a role. Often it isn’t one major issue. It’s the accumulation of several smaller factors that together create a barrier to a healthy ongoing pregnancy.

If you’ve experienced recurrent miscarriage, you deserve answers, not just reassurance.

Mel works with women Australia-wide via Zoom to help investigate the factors that may be contributing to recurrent pregnancy loss and create a personalised plan moving forward.

A lot of women expect perimenopause One of the biggest myths in perimenopause is that your hormones are simply “low.” to look like a slow, steady decline in hormones.

In reality, it’s often much more chaotic than that.

One week oestrogen may be higher than expected. The next week it may drop. Progesterone can fluctuate too. This hormonal unpredictability is often why symptoms seem to come out of nowhere.

Mood swings. Anxiety. Sleep disruption. Breast tenderness. Weight changes. Headaches. Irregular periods.

And here’s what can make it even more confusing…

Your blood tests may look “normal” while you’re still feeling very far from normal.

This is why understanding your symptoms, your cycle patterns, your metabolic health and your individual presentation matters so much during perimenopause.

If you’ve suddenly found yourself saying:
“I’ve always eaten the same way, but now I’m gaining weight.”
“I don’t feel like myself anymore.”
“Everything feels different.”

You’re not imagining it, and you’re certainly not alone.

Toni works with women navigating perimenopause every day and helps create personalised treatment plans based on what’s actually happening in your body, not just a single blood test result.

One of the hardest conversations I have in clinic is with women who are doing everything “right” and still aren’t pregnant.

They’re taking the supplements.
Tracking ovulation.
Eating well.
Timing in*******se perfectly.

Then they start blaming themselves when it doesn’t happen.

But fertility isn’t a checklist.

Sometimes the issue isn’t that you’re not doing enough. Sometimes it’s that nobody has identified what your body actually needs.

You can be ovulating and still have poor egg quality.
You can have a regular cycle and still struggle with implantation.
You can have “normal” test results and still have important pieces of the puzzle being missed.

More supplements aren’t always the answer.

A clear strategy is.

If you’ve been trying to conceive and feel like you’re doing everything right but getting nowhere, book a free discovery call with Mel. She specialises in fertility, IVF support and complex fertility cases and can help you understand what may be getting overlooked.
