BROADCAST BY HIS EXCELLENCY BOLA AHMED TINUBU, PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED
FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA
ON THE NATIONWIDE PROTEST

DATE: SUNDAY 4TH AUGUST 2024

My fellow Nigerians,

1. I speak to you today with a heavy heart and a sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil and violent protests unleashed in some of our states.

2. Notably among the protesters were young Nigerians who desired a better and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled.

3. I am especially pained by the loss of lives in Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of public facilities in some states, and the wanton looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organisers that the protest would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties sets us back as a nation, as scarce resources will be again used to restore them.

4. I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence and destruction.

5. As President of this country, I must ensure public order. In line with my constitutional oath to protect the lives and property of every citizen, our government will not stand idly by and allow a few with a clear political agenda to tear this nation apart.

6. Under the circumstances, I hereby enjoin protesters and the organisers to suspend any further protest and create room for dialogue, which I have always acceded to at the slightest opportunity. Nigeria requires all hands on deck and needs us all - regardless of age, party, tribe, religion or other divides, to work together in reshaping our destiny as a nation. To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry or such threats in the Nigeria we seek

Youths Are One of Society's Main Agents of Change and Development

“PARENTS LISTEN TO YOUR CHILDREN, WE ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW, TRY TO PAY OUR SCHOOL FEES AND GIVE US A SOUND EDUCATION…”

As a child, we had so much fun singing the above primary school rhymes. Beyond arousing our infantile enthusiasm, the song leaves us with a message of hope that “we are the Leaders of Tomorrow”. As a result, we grew up in the expectation that we would lead someday (tomorrow).

Well, we are here now, we are at the stage where we are suppose to be manifesting these leadership prophesies made since the days of yore, but, hardly can we find same materializing as our old leaders continue to recycle themselves at the helms of affairs… how sad.

It is commonplace to find various metaphors being employed to qualify the word ‘youths’. Such words as “Building Blocks” “Pillars” “Future Leaders” “Cornerstone” among others clearly shows the importance of youths in every setting. While this is utterly true, it is sad to note that the youth in recent times have been relegated to the background of nation building (Governance).

Facts and figures clearly show that only few youths are actively in the governance of their nation.

Sadder is the reality that the vibes and energies of youths are now being harnessed to pursue vices which paint the nation black and mars our national integrity. (Youths are the major champions of internet fraud, popularly called “yahoo, yahoo”. They are also used as thugs during elections, to mention a few).

Who are the youth of today?

Being young is a synonym of change, progress and future. Being young is, ultimately, facing challenges and creating or recreating a space for future full development. It means turning problems into opportunities and solutions and being the driving force of society.

Young people not only represent the future of our country, we are one of society’s main agents of change and progress. We have a great effect on economic development.
