"I moved to the outskirts of Talaton in 2010 but didn't really use the shop. When I moved into the village last year, I thought it could be an opportunity to get more involved. It turned out to be a very good idea. I met more people, felt more integrated into the community — and I'd recommend anyone giving it a try."

Two and a quarter hours, once a week. That's the ask. What you get back tends to be a lot more than that.

⭐ Food Hygiene Rating — 5 out of 5!

We're delighted to share that Talaton Community Shop has retained its top food hygiene rating following our latest inspection. The certificate is now proudly displayed in the shop, but we wanted to share the news here too.

This rating belongs to our volunteers. Every week, without fuss, they're checking stock, monitoring use-by dates, recording chiller temperatures, and keeping the shop clean and tidy.

It's the kind of behind-the-scenes commitment that rarely gets noticed — but it's exactly what a 5-star rating is built on.

Thank you to every one of them. 💚

"When I first came to view my prospective new property, I called in at the shop to see what it offered. The welcome I received made Talaton stand out as the sort of place I wanted to be."

This volunteer moved to Talaton from out of county and signed up to meet people. What they found was a way into village life that would have taken years to build any other way — and the chance to contribute to something that genuinely matters here.

If you're new to the village, or just haven't quite found your place in it yet, a shift at the shop might be the simplest place to start.

Interested? Ask in store and meet our team.

📣It's Volunteers' Week, and we want to pull back the curtain on what keeping your community shop running actually involves.

Each volunteer shift is 2¼ hours. That's it. In that time you might be on the till, restocking shelves, taking a phone order, or simply being a friendly face for whoever comes through the door. Full training is provided, and there's always someone at the end of the phone if you need support.

No targets. No hard sell. Just you, the village, and a bit of your time.

If you'd like to know more, come in to the shop and speak to our team.

🚂 What a weekend — Clan Line steamed through yesterday and turned a few heads.

A quick note for the rail enthusiasts: she's actually a Merchant Navy class engine, a step up from the Standard Class 6 "Clan" locomotives she's sometimes confused with. 35028 hauls some of Britain's most celebrated excursion trains, including the Belmond British Pullman. Lovely thing to see pass through.

We're open as usual throughout the week, including Monday's bank holiday. Come in and say hello.

🍞 Sourdough from Sidwell Street — these are flying out. A small supply lands on Tuesdays, from pre ordering: place your order by 12 noon Thursday for the following week. Orders can be a one-off or regular. A limited amount will be on general sale on Fridays, while stocks last.

🍞We also stock bread and rolls from Halletts Craft Bakery in Paignton — award-winning bakers worth knowing about if you don't already. hallettsthebakers.co.uk

Last chance today — free sourdough tastings are still on. 🍞

If you missed yesterday, come in this morning and try the loaves from Sidwell Street Bakery in Exeter. Mainly White, Wholemeal, and Seeded — all proper sourdough, made fresh every day.

We've got good and bad news... we actaully sold out yesterday, that's our bad news. The good news is that you can place an order for collection in the shop next Friday!

And if you've already tried one — let us know what you thought in the comments. 👇

Today's the day — free sourdough tastings are in the shop right now. 🍞

We've got three loaves in from Sidwell Street Bakery in Exeter:
🍞 White
🌾 Wholemeal
🌱 Seeded
All sourdough. All made fresh. All available to taste before you buy.

Sidwell Street are a proper community organisation — bakery, café, cookery school, kitchen garden, and a green space in the middle of the city. They're independent and they welcome everyone. The kind of place Talaton would be proud to be supplied by.

If you've not tried proper sourdough before, this is a good place to start. And if you have — come and see how Sidwell Street's compares. We think you'll be impressed.
Tastings continue tomorrow (Saturday) too, so spread the word. 👇
