Helen's Bay Organic Established 1991 we grow a variety of fresh organic fruit & veg. We provide free home-delivery (see John McCormick established Helen's Bay Organic in 1991.

It is situated on 20 acres of fields adjacent to Belfast Lough in Helen's Bay, Co. Down and is licensed to EU organic standards. Delivery service
We provide a weekly delivery of fresh Organic produce directly to your door. We grow a wide varaiety of summer and winter vegetables in our fields and polytunnels and those vegetables not suitable to grow on our soil type we source from organic farms as

local to us as possible - only using imports when there is no local alternative available. We also deliver organic fruit packs, free range eggs, and some organic kitchen pantry supplies. Our vegetable and fruit bags are packed in a variety of sizes to meet dffering household needs. If we were to pack to individual requirements it would increase the costs - so this approach keeps our delivery scheme affordable and accessible to everyone. We do offer extras of your favourite vegetables and fruit and a 'no potatoes' selection. Some people request a 'no onions' option. So if there is something you cannot eat or that you really love please get in touch and we will do our best to accommodate you. Farm Shop
Open Fridays only, 10-4 offers all our own & imported organic fruit and veg plus a selection of dry goods. Click & Collect

The beautiful lichen on these rocks reminds me of how minerals are produced in our soils.
Lichen is where two species, principally a fungus and an algae, team up working together with weathering to extract minerals from the rock. .

In the soil there are many fungi and bacteria and other organisms doing the same thing drawing their energy from the sugars produced from plant roots and organic matter.

Today there is a growing concern that food produced from intensive chemical production is severely depleting the mineral stock in soils. Using chemical fertilisers and pesticides , especially fungicides, is detrimental to soil life which in turn reduces the mineral stock in the soil if not given time to recover.

Organic standards prohibit the use of these chemicals and require a regenerative period after cropping that is not extractive but rebuilds fertility and minerals in the soil. It is well proven that these standards do produce a healthier soil thus healthier food. .com delivered

Plant roots bursting from one of our fields where we will grow veg next year. Plant roots feed the soil biome by releasing root exudates, which are carbon-rich compounds, sugars, and other molecules that act as a food source for soil microbes. This exchange, occurring in the rhizosphere (the area around the roots), supports a thriving community of bacteria, fungi, and other organisms that are crucial for nutrient cycling and soil health. The plant also secretes mucilage for lubrication and protection, which further nourishes the soil biome and helps bind soil particles. A healthy soil without the use of chemical fertilisers.

Prepping harvested beds to sow protector rye grain which forms a living blanket on the beds . This is the last sowing of rye for this year. There are still a few more beds which will get cleared in the next few weeks so these will get sown out with westerworlds rye grass seed which can be broadcast on the surface and grow on without having to put machinery back on the land again. These green manures soak up the nutrients to prevent them getting washed away in the winter rains. organic veg

Nature is having a tough time surviving how we care for our environment and individually it seems hopeless as biodiversity crashes . However our gardens , no matter how big or small, can become refuges for regeneration. I will definitely be at the above talk in Queens.
