Operation Fenkil: A Victory That Amazed the World
Today, we proudly celebrate the historic liberation of Massawa Port through Operation Fenkil — one of the greatest military and strategic victories in African liberation history.
On this day, Eritrean freedom fighters showed the world that determination, unity, sacrifice, and love for (homeland) are stronger than any modern weapons. With limited resources but unlimited courage, our heroes defeated a powerful enemy and liberated Massawa by land and sea.
This victory was not only admired by Eritreans. Even foreign observers, diplomats, journalists, military experts, and people from different countries — including white people from Europe and North America — were amazed by the discipline, intelligence, and bravery of the Eritrean fighters. Many studied Operation Fenkil in military academies as an example of successful planning and people’s war.
Operation Fenkil proved that a small nation with strong belief can defeat oppression and protect its sovereignty. It strengthened the spirit of the people and accelerated the final victory of independence in 1991.
Today, we honor our martyrs who paid the highest price for our freedom. We remember the wounded, the veterans, and all who sacrificed their youth for Eritrea’s dignity.
Let this day remind the young generation that our freedom was not a gift — it was earned with blood, sweat, and tears. We have a responsibility to protect it, develop our country, and pass this history to future generations.
