The Akosombo strain is the legally improved strain of tilapia that is found in Ghana. Since 2005, the breeding of this strain has continued and it is in its 10th generation according to Quoc et al, 2021. This strain of tilapia produces large and fast growing tilapia and it is competitive compared to the native Akosombo tilapia.
Even though some people may have their reservations concerning the improved Akosombo strain, incidents of food security and the growing population of Ghana may have led to its wide-spread acceptance on the Ghanaian market.

Though it's important to have biodiversity in the farmed fish species, Ghanaians majorly consume the Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the African Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) which are the commercially well-known farmed fish species in Ghana.

For over a decade, there has been a significant rise in the growth of tilapia in the cages on the Volta lake with the ponds and dams/digouts showing a gradual rise.
For catfish, the use of earthen and concrete ponds and more recently tarpaulin tanks are on the increase.

With this, communities can have easy accessibility to fish protein thus boosting the health of the average Ghanaian.

Ghana mainly sources its fishes from the marine, imports and more recently through aquaculture.
Over years, the marine sector has produced about 80% of the total fish supply with an annual average of about 300,000 metric tonnes.
The marine fishery sector entails about 3 subdivisions for marine catch based on the method of catch.
Which includes;
1. The artisanal method
2. The semi-industrial method
3. The industrial method

Below is a picture showing the artisanal boats with some women.
