ALDI gets green light for new €6.5M Cootehill store
25 new jobs to be created
ALDI Ireland today confirmed it is set to open a new €6.5M store in Cootehill, Co. Cavan in 2024.
The news comes as the supermarket was granted planning permission from An Bord Pleanála for its new 1,315sqm store today. 60 jobs will be created during the construction phase, with 25 permanent roles being created upon opening. The store will be centrally located along Station Road and Market Street.
Featuring ALDI’s award-winning Project Fresh layout, the 1,315sqm store will be powered by 100% green electricity. In addition, Cootehill shoppers will also benefit from four electric vehicle charging points at the new store along with 10 bicycle rack stands.
Commenting, Colin Breslin, ALDI Ireland Managing Director of Buying and Services said: “Today is a great day for the people of Cootehill as we have just received planning permission to build a new store there. We are particularly delighted for those people who have campaigned tirelessly and signed petitions supporting our efforts to come to the town. Their contributions have paid off and ALDI is delighted not only to be able to offer unbeatable value and bring our amazing prices to Cootehill, but also create a host of new employment opportunities in the town.”
Barnardos Research
Research conducted by Amárach Research on behalf of Barnardos and ALDI Ireland revealed that 49% of parents in Ulster and Connacht stated they have cut down spending in areas such as household and medical bills to afford food. As well as this, one third (33%) often worry about not being able to provide food for children in their care and 7% skip meals in an average week, highlighting the great need for a discount retailer in the area.
Community
ALDI’s one existing store in county Cavan is deeply involved with its local community. To date, the store has donated over 29,000 meals to local charities through FoodCloud, saving the charities more than €36,000. The store is also part of ALDI’s Community Grants network, with CUAN Cancer Support availing of the €500 bursary grant last year.
As part of ALDI’s ongoing commitment to the local environment and community, ALDI has planted more than 44,000 trees across Co. Cavan to date.
