This is Kolhapuri Masad rice, which grows only in the region of Kolhapur-Satara. The locals of this region love eating this rice with milk ("doodh bhat") every day. Today, though, it's rarely grown here because of commercial agriculture. We were lucky enough to find seeds and save it from extinction.

Earthism tip: While its thick, rounded grain makes it pair well with milk and dairy products, it's a good alternative to risotto rice too!

About Kokum Butter : Kokum is widely grown in tropical forests of the Western Ghats in Konkan region of Maharashtra & Goa. Kokum scientifically known as “Garcinia indica” is a invasive species found only in Kokan region. Kokum fruit is one of the healthiest fruit on the planet. Kokum butter is an oil derived from the seeds of Kokum fruit used by local communities as an substitute for butter. It has reference in 1880 Gazetter of the Bombay Presidency which reflects the rich life styles of local communities close to nature in Kokan. But with the modern age of fast food and influence of cosmopolitan lifestyle the techniques of extracting butter at home lost its charm.
