Best Management of Fish Farming for Small-Scale Farmers
Successful fish farming depends more on good management than on pond size. Even a small pond can produce high profits if managed properly.

1. Choose the Right Fish Species
For small-scale farmers, the best fish are:
Tilapia — fast growing, easy to manage, strong market demand.
Catfish — hardy and grows well in many conditions.
Many farmers combine tilapia and catfish for better production.

2. Build a Good Pond
A good pond should:
Be near a reliable water source.
Have clay soil to reduce water leakage.
Be protected from floods.
Have proper inlet and outlet channels.
Recommended depth:
1–1.5 meters for small ponds.

3. Prepare the Pond Properly
Before stocking fish:
Remove weeds and predators.
Dry the pond for several days if possible.
Apply manure or lime when needed to improve water quality.

4. Use Healthy Fingerlings
Buy fingerlings from trusted hatcheries. Choose:
Active fish
Same size
Disease-free fish
Poor-quality fingerlings reduce profits.

5. Proper Stocking Density
Avoid overcrowding. For small-scale ponds:
About 2–5 fish per square meter is safe for beginners.
Too many fish lead to:
Slow growth
Diseases
Low oxygen

6. Feed Management
Feeding is the biggest secret in fish farming.
Use:
Commercial fish feed when possible.
Supplement with local feeds such as maize bran, soybean meal, termites, duckweed, or kitchen leftovers.
Feed:
2–3 times daily
At the same time every day
Avoid overfeeding because it pollutes the water.

7. Maintain Good Water Quality
Fish need clean water and oxygen.
Important signs of poor water:
Fish gasping at the surface
Bad smell
Dirty green or black water
Management:
Change part of the water regularly.
Prevent chemicals and pesticides from entering the pond.
Plant grass around the pond to reduce erosion.

8. Control Diseases Early
Watch fish every day.
Danger signs:
Poor feeding
Swollen body
White patches
Dead fish floating
Remove sick or dead fish immediately.
