Women's Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC

As a Board Member of Women’s Legal Resource Centre (WOLREC), I am of attending the 2025 Salima Children’s Parliament at Salima Secondary School today.

Organized under WOLREC’s Civil Society Organizations Capacity Strengthening Program, funded by SIDA through Save the Children Malawi, this inspiring platform gives children the opportunity to raise issues affecting their lives, debate solutions, and present actionable resolutions to duty bearers.

Excited to witness firsthand how these young parliamentarians deliberate, advocate, and lead with confidence. The experience is a powerful reminder that children are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are leaders today.

Empowering Young Voices: Girls Debate on Crucial Topic “ Teachers and Parliamentarians Who Deserve More Salaries for the Growth and Development of a State.”

Our girls recently engaged in a thought-provoking debate on the topic: "Teachers and Parliamentarians Who Deserve More Salaries for the Growth and Development of a State." This discussion showcased their critical thinking, public speaking, and argumentation skills.

*Key Arguments:*

- *For:* Participants argued that increased salaries for teachers and parliamentarians would attract and retain top talent, leading to improved education and governance.
- *Against:* Others contended that salary increases should be prioritized for other essential workers or that the funds could be better allocated elsewhere.

- The debate highlighted the importance of fair compensation for key professionals in driving national growth and development.
- Our girls demonstrated their ability to research, analyze, and articulate their thoughts on complex issues.

This debate not only empowered our girls to express their opinions but also fostered a deeper understanding of the topic and its implications.

Best regards,
Girls Empowerment Network Media and Communication Team.

A two-day Children’s Parliamentary Session is currently underway in Salima, offering a vital platform for children to voice issues that directly impact their lives.

Speaking at the commencement of the event today, Salima District Council Acting Director of Administration, Light Burtone, expressed optimism that this third session of the Children’s Parliament will help address some of the district’s pressing challenges.

"This event is important as it brings to light various issues that hinder children in our society. Children are facing different forms of hardships that need to be addressed," he said.

Among the issues raised were lack of support for children's education, highlighting concerns such as shortage of teaching and learning materials, inadequate classrooms, and other critical infrastructure gaps. The children also talked about harmful cultural norms such as early marriages.

This year's Salima District Children's Parliament is taking place under the theme: Budgeting for Children's Rights: A Step toward Malawi 2063!
