Challenges Faced by Local Farmers in Malawi
Local farmers in Malawi encounter significant challenges that impact their agricultural productivity and livelihoods. Here are five key challenges:
_Climate Change
Climate change has resulted in unpredictable rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and floods, all of which negatively affect crop production. Farmers rely heavily on rain-fed agriculture, which makes them vulnerable to these climate variations.
_Limited Access to Capital
Many small-scale farmers struggle to access loans or capital needed for purchasing quality seeds, fertilizers, and equipment. This lack of financial resources limits their ability to invest in improved farming practices and boost their yields.
_Inadequate Infrastructure
Poor infrastructure, including roads, storage facilities, and irrigation systems, hampers farmers’ efforts to transport their produce to markets, store surplus crops, and manage water effectively during the dry season.
_Market Access and Fair Pricing
Farmers often face challenges in accessing stable and fair markets for their produce. Middlemen may exploit them by offering low prices, while price fluctuations and limited market information make it difficult for farmers to plan and secure fair returns on their crops.
