REASONS WHY SOME POULTRY FARMERS DON'T MAKE MONEY FROM THEIR POULTRY BUSINESS

Though I’m writing this post for poultry farmers, the content could be useful for every other areas of the Agribusiness too.

1. Most Poultry Farmers are Blind to their Market.

By this, I mean, they really don’t understand the market they are playing in.

It’s very common to see Africans waking up one day and think, “Since I have ### amount of money, which business can I start?”

The next thing he does is going to the internet or speak with some friends. Few days after that, he has read and heard from people that poultry, fishery or pig farming could make him money. The next thing he/she does is to start planning how to start a poultry farm.

Every successful entrepreneur knows that this is a wrong way to start a business.

Before you start any business, you have to spend quality time to understand the market you’re planning to sell to. In the case of poultry business (which we’re using as case study), you’ll have to consider what kinds of poultry products your target market loves and at what time of the year they prefer such.

This is what I mean. Are you planning to sell to a group of people who love to buy broilers, cockerels or only eggs? Would they buy your broilers only in the festive period or always? How much are they willing to pay for the eggs, broilers and cockerels? Plus, who are the competitors who are already selling poultry products for this market?

You get my idea. To have a successful business (poultry inclusive), an entrepreneur has to start with the end in mind. You have to take some time out, even before you start anything, to understand your target market and the forces of demand and supply.

This is what will give you a great insight into your market and how to play your game as an entrepreneur.

2. Not Seeing Poultry Farming as Business

I have seen so many people who are into animal husbandry as if they are “just farmers”. This mindset is common to most peopl

‼️USES OF CHARCOAL IN CHICKENS‼️

✓ In the dust bath - charcoal or wood ash added to your chickens' dust bath helps to suffocate parasites such as mites, lice, fleas and ticks.

✓ As a feed supplement- it has been observed that animals in the wild will gnaw on charred branches and stumps after a forest fire.

Benefits of Charcoal in a Poultry House.

a. Charcoal works as a laxative and detoxifier, flushing toxins out of the body.

b. It will also help expel internal worms to some extent.

c. Calcium is the most abundant element in wood ash, but it's also a good source of potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

d. Adding wood ash to your chicken feed in a 1% ratio can improve lay rates, extend laying periods and will also reduce the smell of the chicken droppings.

e. Ashes obtained from hardwoods like cedar, oak and maple have five times as many nutrients as softwoods like pine and balsa.

f. As a wound healing agent - wood ash possesses antibacterial qualities which can prevent an open wound from becoming infected and also works to stop bleeding quickly, much like cornstarch, when applied topically to a wound.

g. When ingested, the Vitamin K in the wood ash works to help blood clot and can reverse the effects of the coumadin in rat poison, for instance.

To keep the coop clean - sprinkling wood ash on your coop floor can help reduce odors.

- Like baking soda, wood ash is alkaline and therefore will absorb and help neutralize bad smells. It will also help reduce the humidity levels in your coop.

To reduce the ammonia in your chickens' manure - adding charcoal in a ratio of 1-2% to your chicken feed can help prevent the creation of ammonia, leading to a more ammonia-free output from your chickens.

- Studies have found that it's effective in absorbing the ammonia and preventing fumes from forming.

To control impurities in the water - adding a chunk of charcoal to your waterer can help keep algae and other bacteria from forming and help absorb and filter out othe

RAISING DAY OLD CHICKS TO GROWERS

■Day 1-day 7
- The chicks need to be in a brooder.
What is a Brooder?
- a brooder is a simple construction that is used to raise chicks until a point they are not so vulnerable.
- brooders maybe small rooms, wood construction, brooder boxes etc.
- chicks should stay in a brooder for at least 3 weeks - 4 weeks

●How to make a good brooder!
- make sure the brooder is not cold. ( provide source of heat ie. 100,watts Bulb, hot water bottles, brooder pots, etc)
- consider constructing brooders that's not too big and not too small.
-clean and disinfect the brooder before receiving chicks
- provide enough drinkers and enough feeders
- make sure the brooder is free from insects, rodents and mature chicken.
- provide dry dusting materials (saw dust or rice husks).

■Feeding chicks between day 1-day 7
- the best feed at this age is starter (crumbs or mash). - starter crumbs
- fugo starter mash
- pembe starter mash
- at this age avoid mixing of the feed with jenga, omena, pellets etc. You can mix starter crumbs and starter mash at a proportional ration.
- Avoid feeding broiler starter crumbs for chicks that are not broilers.

●Drugs .
- chick formula (egocin, veta chick start, poltricin, vitamet chick etc, dosage (one teaspoon for 5lts, ½teaspoon for 2 litres and ¼teaspoon for one litre)
- aliseryl (this is a blend of various vitamins that will help your chicks grow fast with strength and energy. Also helps chicks boost the appetite and also helps in preventing numerous diseases). Dosage same as chick formula
- liquid paraffin- this is not the normal paraffin we use at homes. This is a medicated paraffin that helps relieve constipation, helps in digestion, prevents injuries to alimentary canal and helps chicks to pass soft droppings.
- so week one give a combinations of chick formula, aliseryl and liquid paraffin

■Give Newcastle at day 7_
Day 8- day 14
■Feeds
-Same as previous week
-
●Drugs
-continue with chick formula
- use coccidios

*Uses Of Moringa plant and how to use it in Poultry Farming.*

🟪Moringa plant, also known as the drumstick tree, is a highly nutritious plant that can be used in various ways in poultry farming. Here are some of its uses and how to use it:

🟪Feed supplement: Moringa leaves are rich in essential nutrients, including protein, vitamins, and minerals, that are beneficial to poultry health and productivity. You can dry the leaves and grind them into a powder, which can then be added to your poultry feed to supplement their nutrition.

🟪Immune booster: Moringa leaves contain natural antioxidants, which help boost the immune system of poultry birds, making them more resistant to diseases and infections.

🟪Antibacterial agent: Moringa leaves contain antibacterial compounds that can help prevent and control bacterial infections in poultry. Adding moringa powder to the feed can help reduce the incidence of diseases such as coccidiosis and salmonellosis.

🟪Growth promoter: Moringa leaves also contain growth-promoting compounds, which can help improve the growth rate and weight gain of poultry birds, making them more marketable.

To use moringa in poultry farming, you can follow these steps:

🟣Harvest fresh moringa leaves and wash them thoroughly.

🟣Dry the leaves in the shade until they are dry and crisp.

🟣Grind the dried leaves into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle or a grinder.

🟣Mix the moringa powder into your poultry feed, at a ratio of 2-5% of the total feed, depending on the age and weight of the birds.

🟣Store the moringa powder in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight.

Cold weather can significantly affect poultry birds in various ways. Here are some of the key effects:

1. **Reduced Feed Intake**: Cold temperatures can decrease the appetite of poultry, leading to lower feed consumption. This can affect growth rates and overall health.

2. **Decreased Egg Production**: In laying hens, cold stress can lead to a drop in egg production. The hens may prioritize maintaining body temperature over laying eggs.

3. **Increased Energy Requirements**: Poultry require more energy to maintain their body heat in cold conditions. This can lead to increased feed costs if supplemental heating or more energy-dense feed is not provided.

4. **Respiratory Issues**: Cold, damp environments can increase the risk of respiratory diseases in poultry. Poor ventilation combined with cold drafts can exacerbate these issues.

5. **Frostbite**: Extremities like combs and wattles are susceptible to frostbite in freezing temperatures, which can lead to pain, infection, and even loss of these body parts.

6. **Stress and Behavior Changes**: Cold stress can lead to behavioral changes, such as increased aggression or pecking among birds as they compete for warmth and space.

7. **Lowered Immunity**: Extended exposure to cold can weaken the immune system of poultry, making them more susceptible to infections and diseases.

8. **Housing and Management Needs**: Proper housing is crucial in cold weather. Insulation, heating, and bedding material become essential to keep birds warm and dry.

To mitigate these effects, poultry producers should ensure adequate shelter, proper nutrition, and monitoring of bird health during colder months.

WHY POULTRY BIRDS GETS INFECTED WITH CRD,

HOW TO RECOGNIZE INFECTED BIRDS

AND HOW TO PREVENT IT FROM YOUR BIRDS.

When it comes to Poultry farming, farmers needs more than passion, resources and money to succeed in Poultry farming. There are basic principles that must be known before one start to engage into Poultry farming business.

One of the disease that attacks farmers most in their Poultry is CRD
CRD means Chronic Respiratory Disease and the Virus that cause such diseases enters through the respiratory system of the birds.

CRD is likely to occur in farms that have the following attributes.

1) Farms that keep more birds within limited space

2) Farms that are untidy and never pack out over sucked wood shavings and this cause foul smells and High ammonia build up in farms

3) Farms that practice poor ventilation practices and prevent fresh air from flowing into the Pen and hereby there is always heat when farmer enters the pen

4) Farms that refuse to vaccinate their birds at their early stage to prevent diseases outbreak

5) Farms that allow both rain and sun to enter their Poultry Pens.

6) Farms that does not sanitize after they sell off their old stock before restocking.

7) Farms that never changes their litter.

Like and follow our page for more useful POULTRY guides

If some or all of the above is practiced in your farm CRD is likely to visit.
How to know you birds are infected with CRD - 1) They will snore both day and night, .
2) Respiratory Distress. .
3) Coughing, sneezing, and poor movement,
4) Sleeping Why Standing,
5) Their will be discharge from their mouth and nose,
6) Slow Growth
7) Sudden Death ( Some Die why sleeping)

How To Prevent CRD From My Farms -
1) Good biosecurity measures
2) Always packout wet litters
3) Vaccinate your birds early when they are a week or 2weeks old

🔥 9 Signs of a Good Chicken Breed for Farming

Choosing the right chicken breed is crucial, as it accounts for 80% of broilers' meat quality and price. To select a good chicken breed, farmers should know the following signs:

Bright Eyes: A healthy chick should have glowing eyes, indicating good overall health and the ability to see and forage for food.

Even Beak: Avoid chicks with crooked or uneven beaks. The beak is essential for eating and processing food.

Smooth Feathers: Smooth feathers are another sign of a healthy chick. This indicates that the egg was incubated under optimal conditions.

Plump Legs: Chicks should have plump, healthy legs without any deformities. Strong legs are necessary for movement and growth.

Closely Folded Wings: Healthy chicks will keep their wings close to their bodies.

Slim Belly: A swollen or heavy belly can indicate digestive problems. Healthy chicks have a slender, agile belly.

Healed Navel: The navel should be dry and free from infection or swelling. An infected navel can affect the chick's digestive system.
Proper Weight: Newly hatched chicks should weigh within the standard range for their breed.

Good genetics refers to the breed's bloodline and overall health.
Additional Considerations:

Breed Selection: Consider the breed's characteristics, meat quality, market demand, and profitability.

Vaccination: Ensure that chicks are vaccinated against diseases to prevent losses.

Reliable Supplier: Purchase chicks from reputable suppliers to ensure quality.

In conclusion, choosing the right chicken breed is a significant investment. By understanding these key factors, farmers can increase their chances of success.
