The cold wind blew through the small cemetery as Lauren Johnson stood beside her grandmotherβs grave. She pulled her jacket tighter, but it didnβt help. The chill outside was nothing compared to the emptiness she felt inside.
Her eyes were swollen from crying. She watched as the casket slowly lowered into the ground. Her grandmother, Miss Hattie, had been everything to her.
Not just a grandmother, she was her mother, father, her closest friend, the only person who ever truly stood by her. Now she was gone. Across the graveyard stood Sierra, her older sister.
Sierra looked untouched by grief. She wore a fitted designer coat, high-heeled boots, and her hair and makeup were flawless. She looked more like a business executive attending a meeting than someone burying family.
Sierra had left their small town years ago. She moved to Atlanta, chasing her career, money, and success. She only came home for special occasions, and even then, she never stayed long.
