The vast majority of farmed catfish in Nigeria belong to the Clariidae family, often called "airbreathing catfish." These fish have a special organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric air, making them exceptionally hardy and suitable for the high-density conditions common in Nigerian aquaculture.
Here are the primary catfish species farmed in Nigeria, from most to least common:
1. The African Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
This is, without question, the king of Nigerian catfish farming. It accounts for over 90% of all catfish produced in the country.
• Why it's so popular:
o Fast Growth Rate: It reaches harvestable size (1-1.5 kg) very quickly, typically in 6-8 months with good feeding.
o High Stocking Density: Its ability to breathe air means it can be raised in ponds, concrete tanks, and tarpaulin (tarpaulin) pens at very high densities.
o Hardiness: It is highly resistant to diseases and can tolerate a range of water quality conditions better than most fish.
o Market Demand: Nigerians are very familiar with and have a strong preference for its taste and texture. It's known as "Catfish" or "Clarias" in the market.
2. The Hybrid (Heterobranchus spp. x Clarias gariepinus)
This is a cross between the African Sharptooth Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) and the Vundu Catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis). The hybrid is often called "Heteroclarias."
• Why it's farmed:
o Heterosis (Hybrid Vigor): The hybrid often grows faster and larger than either of its purebred parents.
o Better Feed Conversion: It can convert feed into body mass more efficiently in some cases.
o Hardiness: It inherits the hardiness and air-breathing capability from both parent species.
o Size Potential: Heterobranchus species are known to grow very large, and the hybrid benefits from this trait.
3. The Vundu Catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis)
While less common than C. gariepinus or the hybrid, Heterobranchus is farmed, often for specific traits or in certain regions.
• Key Characteristics:
o Very Large Size: It has the potential to grow much larger than Clarias gariepinus, making it attractive for farmers targeting a premium, large-fish market.
o Distinct Taste: Some consumers prefer its taste and flesh quality.
o Slightly Different Requirements: It can be slightly more sensitive to water quality and handling stress compared to C. gariepinus.
