COCONUT PLANTATION: A PROFITABLE VENTURE

Coconut plantation is not popular like oil palm plantation in Nigeria despite its numerous economic benefits. let us briefly analyze its economic benefits.

1. Coconut, like many other perennial agricultural economic crops is a multi-million dollar sector. When compared with oil palm plantation, coconut plantation has low capital-intensive, low labor intensive and life-long sources of steady income (it is an all year round tree).

2. Globally, the demand for coconut oil is an increase on a daily basis due to its industrial value. Nigeria imports coconuts from Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana, to provide raw material for local industries.

COCONUT VARIETIES

There are basically two varieties of coconuts: Tall and Dwarf.

1. It is the cross breeding between Tall & Dwarf (TxD), which produces hybrid Dwarf coconut which is a very high yielder under good management conditions.

2. The hybrid dwarf coconut varieties start producing inflorescence in 3 to 4 years after planting. Dwarf coconut variety produces more nuts/fruits per tree per year; 40 to 50 fruits per bunch and it can produce up to 5 to 5 bunches...

3. The characteristics of hybrid coconuts include: early maturation, fruiting between 3 and 4 years, unlike 5 to 9 years waiting period for the tall varieties; more kernel and oil content.
There are species like: Malayan Yellow Dwarf Coconuts, Fiji Dwarf coconut and
Golden green Malay.

INCOME ANALYSIS

One hectare of land will accommodate 200 trees of coconuts in low density plantations. In the high density plantations, about 280 to 300 trees are planted on one hectare of land, while 450-480 trees of coconuts are planted on one hectare in the ultra-high density plantations.

At least, each coconut tree would produce about 200 coconuts in a year, and the nuts would increase as the trees mature in age, bearing fruits for no fewer than 60 years

One hectare of land using the high density population (300 trees per hectare). Averagely, 1 hectare of coconut plantation will produce 60,000 nuts (300 × 200 = 60,000).

Note: fruiting and harvesting would start in the fourth year if hybrid varieties are planted.

The smallest size of nut is sold at the rate of N150. Therefore, 60,000 nuts × 150 = N9,000,000. This will generate an annual income of 9 Million annually.
