The Prisoner’s Last Wish Was to See His Dog — But When the German Shepherd Broke Free and Ran Into His Arms, Something Unexpected Happened…

He had been locked away in cell B-17 for twelve long years. Every day the same view — the cold iron bars, the stench of rust, and the silence that slowly ate away at his spirit. The day came. The prison yard was heavy with silence. Guards lined up, the warden stood watch, and the dog was led in — leashed, trembling, but filled with a strange energy.

The moment it saw its master, the German Shepherd tore free, sprinting with all its strength. In a heartbeat, it leapt straight into his arms. He stumbled back, but didn’t care. For the first time in twelve years, he felt the warmth he had longed for. He clutched his dog tightly, burying his face into its thick fur, and the tears he had held back for years finally broke free.

“You are my child… my loyal companion…” he whispered hoarsely. “What will you do when I’m gone?..”

It was as if the dog answered — low whines, pressing its body closer into his chest. The guards stood frozen in place. Some turned away, unable to bear the sight of two souls so deeply bound, now forced into parting.

Slowly, he lifted his eyes to the warden, filled with desperate pleading.
“Please… take care of him. Don’t let him be abandoned.”

The moment I realized both of my husband’s phones were off, I knew something was wrong. I tried to stay calm, but my hands wouldn’t stop shaking.

I called his friends, colleagues, and even his family members but none of them had seen or heard from him since the previous night.

That was when I raised the alarm.

We rushed to the nearest police station, but they told us it hadn’t been 24 hours yet, so they couldn’t officially tag him as missing. Their words felt like a slap. How could I wait when I knew something was wrong?

We didn’t sit still. My brothers and a few friends quickly formed a small search group. Together, we drove to the hotel where he had lodged.

At the reception, I could still feel my heart pounding. “Please,” I begged impatiently, “I’m looking for my husband. He stayed here last night.”

They checked their records and confirmed he had indeed checked in — but hadn’t checked out.

We asked to see the CCTV footage. The manager said the person in charge wasn’t around and that we should wait. I could barely stand still. Agonizing hours passed before a staff member finally came with the keys to the security room.

When they turned on the footage, I held my breath. There he was — my Samuel — walking into the hotel, smiling, and greeting the receptionist. Then he went upstairs. Few hours later, he came back down briefly, bought a pack of juice, and returned to his room.

That was the last time he appeared on the screen.

When we asked to see the camera feed from the hallway near his room, the footage went blank just before midnight.

“Why?” I demanded. “Why did it cut off?”

The manager hesitated, then said, “Ma, our generator is usually turned off at night to save fuel. The rechargeable lights power the rooms, but the cameras go off.”

What? "Can you even hear yourself speak? Why then do you run a hotel when you can't afford the necessary precautionary steps for their safety?! Just pray to God nothing happens to my husband else!" I was shaking but the manager only looked down in silence.

It sounded ridiculous. A hotel turning off its generator — and security cameras — at night? But at that moment, there was nothing I could do. We decided to wait until the 24 hours elapsed before involving the police again.

But just as we were preparing to go back to the station that evening, my phone beeped.

It was a message from an unknown number. I paused as another feeling of dread washed over me. Something tells me that the content of that message isn't good. And I was right.

I opened it and froze. It was a picture of my husband — sitting helplessly in what looked like a thick forest. His clothes were dirty, and his face was brused. He was shirtless.

Beneath the photo, there was a short text that read: “If you want to see him again in one piece, don’t go to the police. Do exactly as we say.”

My hands trembled so bad and a loud scream escaped my lips as I dropped the phone. My whole body began to tremble. Everyone in the room rushed toward me, but I couldn’t even speak.

The only words that kept echoing in my mind were — “Don’t go to the police.” The sight of my husband made things worse.

‎Finally, Today is When the Strange Nurse, Nurse Agnes and I will be travelling to South Africa!!, the D-Day has finally come!.
‎
‎I set alarm on my phone, that it should wake up by 3:30am West African Time, and luckily, it didn't disappoint me, I got up by that time, And Started preparing.
‎
‎I checked my WhatsApp, I could see the messages from our Board Managers asking me whether I'm fully ready today, I replied them that I've woken up.
‎
‎I would have chatted Nurse Agnes, but unfortunately, she didn't Give me her phone Number, I don't know why, but I didn't bother to disturb her.
‎
‎So after making all my Preparations, it was already 4:20am, So I left my house, Locked my doors properly, knowing fully well that, it's after 21 days that I'll be visiting it again.
‎
‎I got to the Airport by 5am, And I was shocked to see Nurse Agnes already there, with some Nurses and Board Managers, Infact they were the ones that directed me to where they were.
‎
‎They said our flight was to take off by 6am, So during that time, The Board Managers have some time to speak to us for the last time to be of our best Behaviors,... He told us that Arguments and disagreements between ourselves is not allowed at all.
‎
‎So They told us to move to the Specific Airplane where we'll take our flight, and for this time, Agnes and I didn't seat close, The arrangements didn't favor our closeness this time; and also lest I forget,...
‎Since That Saturday evening when I asked that Why didn't any of her Loved ones called her when she fainted, Nurse Agnes hasn't been Talking to me, Even while in the Airport, when I greeted her, she only waved "Hi", that was all.

‎The flight took off almost 7 due to some delays, and by 2pm, we landed in an airport, According to one of the South Africans I asked over there, they said we're currently at Johannesburg, Tambo Airport.

‎We got down, Took our Luggages, Agnes and I, and we entered an immigration, where they gave us some documents to sign, and Visa-free Application,to be able to stay in South Africa for that period of time.
‎
‎We left there by 3:30pm, And we started heading to the hotel that our hospital has booked for us. They had already sent the Address to us, so we forwarded it to the Taxi Driver, and he agreed that he knows the place. It was an hour drive to Pretoria.

‎The driver noticed our uneasiness, and asked us whether we are from South Africa, We told him no.
‎
‎He asked us which country, I replied him Nigerian, he laughed and said
‎
‎"Wow, Welcome to our country, I just hope you love it"
‎
‎We got to the Hotel, And beside it, there were changing Currencies, so I changed the Naira I have in me, to Rand, and we entered the hotel.
‎We told the Receptionist that our hospital has Paid for our stay here, they asked us to send receipts, we sent it to them, they scanned it, and they said we can Stay for the required 21 days we'll be staying.
‎
‎It was two rooms, But nurse Agnes' room was the next After mine. It was then Nurse Agnes broke the silence and finally talked to me

‎"So Joshua we finally reached"

‎"Yeah, so how was the flight, I hope there was no inconvenience?"
‎
‎She laughed "You mean the same flight that You and I entered?, anyways, it was alright, and I'm sure it's the same for you right?"

‎"Well I'm so nervous, just praying for a good stay here in this South Africa, so I can go back to my Country "

‎I entered this amazing elegant room, to be honest, South Africans will definitely have amazing hotels based on the one that I entered, it was so amazing.

‎But as I entered My room, I was having mixed feelings, and they were all FEELINGS OF FEAR. I was just thinking maybe Agnes won't Appear to me in the night, based on the rumors that she's a Wìtch, or maybe she won't do any Weird demonic things, and for the fact that, her room is close to mine, but I can't just assume that for someone, I mean, What if she's not demonic?

‎But In all, I just thank God for safe Trip to Pretoria Here, and I'm just hoping to have an amazing time here, and if possible, get to know more about this Strange Nurse, Agnes...

‎Our Flight With The Strange Nurse and I will be taking off on Sunday, 31st August, And to be honest, I'm just getting nervous!!.

‎Apart from the Fact that it would be my first time going to Pretoria, South Africa, I'm just imagining how this 21 days Medical Conference Trip will look like.
‎
‎So Nurse Agnes and I started our preparation. The Board Invited The two of us for a meeting to shed more Lights on what -and-What must be done there, and what mustn't be done.
‎
‎Although, It's not my first time representing My Hospital on a Trip, as a matter of fact, My hospital Assigns me for most Medical Trips and Representations,... I don't know why they do it, They just love doing it.
‎
‎"So Doctor Joshua, how's your preparation with Nurse Agnes on this Trip?" one of the Board Managers asked me in the meeting..
‎
‎"Well Sir, We can say it's going well, I have washed my clothes, And Put all the Needed equipment In the Travelling bag.."

‎"Joshua, I hope you know you'll be giving Speech on some intervals, I mean, anytime They fixed a Conference during the Trip in South Africa?"

‎We agreed to everything that was being said at the Meeting, they gave us some documents to sign, and they dismissed us.

‎I Quickly went to Doctor Sam, my friend, to share him the latest Progress concerning this Upcoming Trip. To be honest, I'm going to miss him, And everyone, that 21 days is just like 21 years of loneliness.

‎As we were gisting, Nurse Agnes passed us, and I asked her she was coming from...

‎I kept on wondering why the Strange Nurse didn't Come to work yesterday, and to be honest, I was already loosing it!, My head is really turning me off, this Strange Nurse is driving me cråzy, and i determine within myself to say it to her face the next Day.

‎So today o, She came to Work, but she came very Late, by 11:30am. As she was signing Attendance in the Receptionist Center, One of the Managers met her, and Asked why she came so late
‎
‎"Agnes, there's this Medical case that we wanted you to handle for us this Morning, But we couldn't find you on seat, what's the problem With you?, what gave you the audacity to just Be absent from the Hospital without saying anything or informing anyone"
‎
‎"I'm so Sorry Doctor, I'... I wasn't feeling fine as I got home that evening, the sickness was impromptu, so I had to stay back yesterday to treat myself, I've not even gotten better now, But at least I'm recovering Sir"
‎
‎"What sort of excuse is this?..., ok fine,so why didn't you inform any of the staffs or The Hospital before taking that step?, didn't you know the Hospital Email or the phone number?"

‎"I'm so sorry sir, Please I forgot sir, I'm sorry "

‎"You'll definitely be penalized for this, We don't condone Poor and rascaI attitudes to work, just Incase you don't know" He said that, and left Agnes there.

‎I saw Her as she was going to her office, but to be honest, I don't even have the Courage to walk up to her to say anything; Normally I'm an Introvert, Much more walking up to have a Conversation with someone that has been showing Strange characteristics this past few weeks.

‎3 Hours, I heard some noise in Agnes' office; I kept on wondering what was going on there, so I hurriedly left what I was doing and went there.

‎As I got there, I saw Doctor Sam, And 2 other Nurses having a hot Argument and Backslash with Nurse Agnes, but I noticed that in all, Agnes was just quiet and begging them to stop creating a scene.

‎After I received the Email that I'll be going on A Medical Conference Trip to Pretoria with this Strange Nurse, I just carried my Office bag and went home with so many thoughts on my head.
‎
‎I have tried my possible best to Complain to the Managing Board in the Hospital that I can't Be going on a 21 Days Conference Trip in South Africa with a Nurse that everyone is afraid of!,..., with a Nurse that Consciously talks while she sleeps, With a Nurse that her eyes are always yellow, With a nurse that Smiles in her Sleep, But all my complaints fell on deaf ears.
‎
‎I got home, and as I checked my Phone, I saw another Email, saying that the date of the Trip has been fixed!!!., they also said that Nurse Agnes (The Strange Nurse) and I won't be sharing the same Hotel Rooms, but we'll be lodged in the Same Hotel.
‎
‎They also said that any Activities that I carry Out In Pretoria, it must be fine together with Agnes, And at the end of the Trip, we'll write a Documented Rèport On everything that went there. They also said that they have their teams over there who would assist us in Showing us around to navigate South Africa easier.
‎
‎The next Morning, I resumed Work in the Hospital as usual, and I went straight to Doctor Sam, my Friend in the Hospital to discuss On this upcoming Trip.
‎
‎"Sam, The Worst has finally happened, guess,... Just guess!" I Said with my heart papitating
‎
‎Sam replied with Heavy smiles on his face

‎In the evening, I went to That Strange Nurse's Office, But she didn't come to The Hospital today, I only Met her Jacket hanged on her Chair, But she wasn't in the office.
‎I went to the Receptionist, the one who's holding the Attendance of those that came to the Hospital for that day, She said that Agnes didn't come to Work today.

‎"Ahnn Ahnn, What's actually Happening to This Lady, She has never missed A day ever since she was employed, Or was there any Emergency that happened that made her not to be present today?, did she wake up late or something?, or is it that She's not happy with the Trip that was assigned to her?"

‎The Strange Nurse became the Talk of the Hospital!!, She was in the Mouth of every Doctor and nurse, because of her strange and Weird Characteristics .
‎
‎Because, First of all, how will you clearly say that, the name that was given to you from Birth is MOTHER AGNES, and the Most Strange thing of all is that, anytime she sleeps, she talks Strange words in her sleep as She's Reciting lncantations, and She also smiles; And when she wakes up and find you in her office, she'll ask You whether you heard what she was speaking in her Sleep!
‎
‎That means, she was Consciously saying it,-- it was so Strange and Weird, but no one decided to point it to her face.
‎
‎One thing about this Strange Nurse is that, She sleeps so much, even on duty, but when it's time for her to Treat Patients, And other Medications/Operation, she does it so Perfectly.
‎
‎There's even one Nurse that reported this Strange Nurse to the Managing Board in the Hospital that MOTHER AGNES has Poor attitude to Work, They wanted to Sack her immediately, because she was just newly Employed And she's already misbehaving, but there was a patient that was rushed to the hospital, and He needed Surgical Attention immediately.

‎We tried and tried our possible best to Rescue the patient as Surgeons, but we couldn't.
‎We were even thinking of Transferring the patient to another Hospital, when this Strange Nurse stepped in!, she said that she could Perform the Operation, and When they asked her for her Qualifications on that aspect, she Boldly told us to give her a Chance so she can convince us

‎And just as she said, She did the Operation successfully, and the Patient was completely restored, That was what saved her from Being Sacked; The Hospital caIIed her "The Gem of the Hospital" , the thing really pained my Friend, Doctor Sam, and other nurses, because everyone really wanted this Strange Nurse to be Fired.

‎So, As usual, I was busy in my office, when I checked my phone, and I saw a Email from the Managing Board that afternoon.
