Hereâs a summary of what I found out about NkomoroâOnuogba Nike (or âOnuogbaâNike / Nkomoro Onuogba Nikeâ) in Enugu State, Nigeria â the issues, history, current disputes, and community structure. If you like, I can also pull up maps, legal docs, or what people on both sides say.
Who / What is NkomoroâOnuogba Nike
It is part of OnuogbaâNike, a town in Enugu East Local Government Area, Enugu State.
Onuogba Nike is among the older towns in the Nike region (Nike is a larger traditional territory).
The Onuogba Nike community is divided into villages / kindreds (umuânna), and its four main villages are Nduno, Obeagu, Ngene-eche, and Ngene-owo. There are also subâareas like EnuâAguâUzamu, Agbamaka, Ogba-anu, Ugbene, and Ogba-akpula.
Historical / Social Context
There is a group known as EzzaâNkomoro, whose members say they migrated from Ezza in presentâday Ebonyi State (in or around the 1950s) to settle in the Onuogba Nike area, at the invitation of the Onuogba Nike people.
The arrangement was that EzzaâNkomoro people would occupy a portion of the land, likely formally or informally agreeing to boundaries / tenancy. Over time, disputes have grown over how much of the land they can claim.
The Recent Dispute / Controversy
This is where things get contentious. Key points:
Parties involved:
The OnuogbaâNike community (traditional owners)
The EzzaâNkomoro settlers (people who settled in Onuogba land)
Prof. Barth Nnaji (former Minister of Power), who is said to have legally acquired a portion of this land via purchase.
Claims:
The EzzaâNkomoro claim that the land is ancestral / belongs to them; that their homes and farmland are being demolished. They say the land belongs to them and that demolitions have rendered people homeless.
On the Onuogba side, and through Prof. Nnajiâs legal representation, the claim is that Nnaji purchased the land (from a person/family called Alinta).
