How I Finally Learnt to Wrap Moi Moi With Leaves🫰🏻💋
If you know me well, you know I like trying new things.
I can see a recipe, a particular food or a new way of doing something and immediately start thinking, hmm… let me try this one too. Lol
For the longest time, I've always wanted to learn how to make moi-moi with leaves.
Growing up, we mostly made moi-moi alagolo with tin milk cans. Later, we started using nylon.
So wrapping moi-moi with leaves?
Hàáà! I didn't grow up doing that one o.
In fact, I had never really seen my mum wrapping moi-moi with leaves, so I didn't even know how to do it.
Meanwhile, one of my sisters knows how to wrap it.
While we were still in Ìjèbú Òde, I watched a video on how to wrap moi-moi with leaves and said:
Hahaha, how hard can it be? Let me try it jàre. So, I used plantain leaves.
Omo, everything scattered. Check the pictures.
My moi-moi was looking balabala!
I tried again at another time, but it still didn't come out the way I wanted.
At one point, my husband just looked at me and said, just use nylon for the remaining ones.
But you know when your mind is not at peace?
Mine was not at all.
I kept telling myself, one day, I will get this thing.
Then, some weeks ago, I got another chance.
I saw fresh moi-moi leaves and I told myself, this time around, I must learn.
I had even asked my sister in law to help me get some leaves because I thought she would be around to teach me.
But when I collected the leaves, madam had work to do and had already left.
I was like, hàáà! So who will now teach me?
Later, I had a video call with Aunty Bisola Kehinde Rasheedat Abisola and told her to explain the moi-moi leaf wrapping to me.
And she started explaining it over the phone.
She told me how to position the leaves, which sides should face each other and how to twist them into a cone.
Honestly, before I even knew it, I GOT IT💪🏻
I wrapped one.
Then another one.
And another one.
And I was like, so this is what I have been stressing myself about all this while?
The first time, I used double leaves because I didn't want any disaster.
And because I didn't have the proper thing to place inside the pot, I had to improvise with what I had.
I placed some support inside the pot, arranged my moi-moi on top, added water and let it cook.
A few of the leaves weren't enough, so the remaining moi-moi still entered nylon.
But omo, IT CAME OUT WELL!
I was so happy and honestly surprised at myself
The next time I wanted to make moi-moi, I decided to take it a step further.
This time, I heard that you can even use just one leaf for a wrap.
I said, okay o. Let me try this one too.
And guess what?
It worked!
No double leaves.
No pot cover inside the pot.
Just my sticks at the bottom, the moi-moi wraps arranged carefully, water added and cooking commenced.
And once again...
It came out beautifully!
Everybody enjoyed it, and I was just there thinking, so I can actually do this?
Honestly, this experience reminded me of something.
Sometimes, there are things we want to try but we're scared because we've failed before.
Maybe your first attempt scattered.
Maybe your second attempt didn't come out well.
Maybe someone even told you:
“Leave it, use the normal method.”
But sometimes, you just need to try again.
Watch.
Ask questions.
Learn.
Try again.
And before you know it, you're doing that thing you once thought was difficult.
So yes...
I can officially say that I now know how to wrap moi-moi with leaves!
And I'm very proud of myself, abeg. Nobody should come and spoil my joy.
