FROM MAY 1, 2026, YOUR BANK ACCOUNT CAN ‘LOCK’ BUT NOT THE WAY YOU THINK.
Many people are shouting,
“CBN wants to block our Bank accounts!”
Calm down. Let’s be factual.
Here is what is REALLY happening;
The 5 Key Things You MUST Know:
1. You can only change your BVN phone number ONCE in your lifetime.
This is to stop SIM swap fraud.
2. Only one device per banking app:
If you log in on a new phone, the old one logs out automatically.
3. ₦20,000 limit on new device (first 24 hours)
Temporary restriction to prevent fraud.
4. 24-hour watchlist for suspicious activity:
Your account can be temporarily restricted if something looks suspicious.
5. BVN is now strictly 18+
No more independent BVN for minors.
So will people be “locked out of their accounts”?
Not exactly.
That part is what people are using to make it go viral.
What can happen is:
If your details are wrong or suspicious, your account may be temporarily restricted.
If you ignore updates (like phone number issues) you may face access stress
But, the goal is fraud prevention, not punishment.
My SIMPLE ADVICE: Before May 1, 2026,
Make sure your BVN phone number is active and If you want to change it, do it before May 1.
Be ready for stricter login checks
Don’t wait until your account starts doing “I no gree for you.”
This rule is not to suffer Nigerians.
It is to stop fraudsters.
But if you are careless with your details,
your own account can stress you.
