You see this livestock business is not for the faint hearted.
Some months back I received a fresh batch of catfish juveniles, I wanted to have very matured and big fish by December so I thought to start early and honestly, it was not the smooth start I expected.
The stock had issues and the fishes started dying in their numbers. Watching them die after investing money, time and effort was painful.
At that point, you begin to ask yourself, “What exactly am I doing? If it were to be in my early stage of business I would just start crying, the death of one catfish back then was enough to cry not to talk of numbers.
But thankfully, we have gone past that stage now.
This experience reminded me that farming whether it is fish farming, poultry, livestock or even crop farming is a business that comes with RISKS.
You can plan well, spend money, provide the right environment and still face challenges beyond your control.
Sometimes, you lose.
Sometimes, you learn.
Sometimes, you start again.
And sometimes, you survive the difficult stage and finally see things turn around.
That is one thing about farming: you need patience, resilience and the ability to keep going even when the beginning doesn’t look promising.
Today, looking at these fishes, I am grateful that we didn’t give up.
Farming isn’t always rosy, but every challenge comes with a lesson.
Here’s to growth, better days and healthier stocks! 🙏🏽
