Series Title: From Ashes to Crown
---
Part 1 – The Boy Nobody Saw
In the quiet village of Obot, where the morning sun kissed the rusted zinc roofs and children fetched water before school, lived a boy named Ekong.
Ekong’s life was one of lack. His father had died early, and his mother, Ekaette, sold firewood to keep food on their mat. Most days, they ate once, and even then, it was watery soup with barely enough garri to go around.
The villagers pitied him, but some mocked him. Children laughed at his torn school uniform, and elders shook their heads whenever he walked by. “That boy will amount to nothing,” they whispered.
But unknown to them, Ekong carried something greater than wealth—a stubborn heart that refused to bow to fate.
He dreamed of a better life, not for himself alone, but for his mother, his people, and his village. Every night, while others slept, he sat under the moonlight, carving small wooden figures and imagining stories of warriors and kings.
It was during one of those nights that fate began to stir. A wandering elder, half-blind and known for speaking in riddles, passed by and saw Ekong carving. He stopped and watched quietly.
“Young one,” the old man croaked, “do you know the hands of a king are shaped not by gold, but by fire?”
Ekong looked up, puzzled.
“I am no king, Baba. I am only a poor boy,” he replied.
The old man smiled faintly, his eyes glinting in the moonlight.
“Perhaps. But remember this night, for the crown chooses not the rich, but the worthy.”
And with that, he vanished into the darkness.
Ekong didn’t know it yet, but his journey from ashes to crown had just begun.
