Sometimes, the problem in poultry production is not always bad chicks.

A farmer may buy quality chicks, but because of long transportation, the chicks may arrive weak and stressed. Some locations are very far from Ibadan — places like Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Calabar and other distant areas. In some cases, chicks may spend almost two days on the road before getting to the customer.

This is why farmers must understand something very important:

The way you manage mildly stressed chicks is not the same way you manage severely stressed chicks.

One common mistake many farmers make is giving feed immediately the chicks arrive.

When chicks are severely stressed from a long journey, the first thing they need is not food. They need to recover first.

For the first few hours, give them clean water mixed with poultry glucose or multivitamin with electrolyte. These help them regain strength, reduce stress and recover from the journey.

Some farmers use normal human glucose, and it can help. But there is a special glucose made for poultry, and some of them also contain anti-stress support. This type is better, especially when the chicks have travelled a long distance.

If severely stressed chicks arrive and you rush to give them feed immediately, mortality can become high. You may even think the chicks were bad, but sometimes the issue is not the chicks. The issue is how they were handled after arrival.

For chicks that travelled long distances, allow them to drink first. Let them regain strength before introducing feed.

Also, remember that even locations close to Ibadan can still have delays. Vehicles can break down, traffic can happen, and chicks may spend more time on the road than expected.

That is why proper arrival management is very important.

How to Care for Noiler Chickens

Proper care is essential if you want your Noiler birds to grow well and remain productive.

✅ 1. Provide a balanced diet
Feed your Noilers with quality feed rich in protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals. If they are on free range, they can also supplement their diet by picking insects, worms, and grasses.

✅ 2. Ensure constant access to clean water
Fresh, clean water should always be available. Water is just as important as feed and helps birds stay healthy and productive.

✅ 3. Maintain good hygiene
Keep the poultry house clean, dry, and well-ventilated. Regular cleaning helps reduce disease outbreaks and keeps your flock comfortable.

✅ 4. Give them enough space
Noilers are active birds and enjoy roaming. Adequate space allows them to exercise, forage naturally, and express their normal behavior.

Danger Signs When Chickens Eat Too Fast (And How to Stop It) 👇

When birds eat too fast, it doesn’t just mean they finish food quickly, it can affect their digestion, health, and growth performance.

👉 What Happens When Birds Eat Too Fast

1. Choking and crop blockage
They may swallow large amounts without proper grinding, leading to feed getting stuck in the crop.

2. Crop issues (impaction or sour crop)
Feed stays too long in the crop
It ferments and causes bad smell (sour crop)
Or it becomes hard and swollen (impaction)

3. Poor nutrient absorption
Even though they eat well, the body doesn’t fully use the nutrients, so growth becomes uneven or slow.

4. Digestive stress

Dominant birds eat fast and more, while weaker ones get less feed and lag behind.

👉 How to Prevent Birds From Eating Too Fast

1. Use enough feeders
Crowding around feeders makes birds rush food. Increase feeder space so all birds eat calmly.

2. Feed in small, controlled portions
Instead of dumping large feed at once, split feeding into 2–3 sessions.

3. Avoid hunger gaps
Long delays make birds attack feed aggressively. Keep a consistent feeding schedule.

4. Use proper feed texture
Very fine or dusty feed encourages gulping. Slightly coarse crumble/pellet helps slower eating.

5. Provide enough clean water
Water helps feed move properly through the digestive system.

6. Reduce competition
Separate weak birds if necessary so stronger ones don’t dominate feeders.

Just 2 hours of low temperature in a poultry pen can lead to high mortality during brooding.

For example, if the heat source goes off by 2am and nobody is there to provide heat until 4am, many chicks may already be weak, chilled, or dead before morning.

Some may not even die immediately. They may look weak in the morning and start dying later in the day because cold exposure can lead to respiratory problems like pneumonia.

And pneumonia is one of the most difficult conditions to treat in young chicks. That is why prevention is better than trying to treat them after they have already been exposed to cold.

This is one of the reasons brooding during the raining season is quite different from brooding in other seasons.

During this period, the weather is colder, the floor can easily become damp, and the chicks need more stable heat to survive and grow well.

Many farmers lose chicks during the raining season, not because the chicks are bad, but because the brooding condition is poor.

When chicks are cold, they will gather together, climb on one another, refuse to eat well, become weak, and mortality can start increasing.

This is why farmers must pay extra attention to brooding during this season.

You must check your chicks regularly.
You must ensure the floor is dry.
You must provide enough heat.
You must block cold breeze from entering the poultry pen.
You must avoid overcrowding.
You must observe the behaviour of the chicks, not just assume everything is fine.

If you are not very close to your farm and you don’t have a gas brooder, you may experience high mortality during this period.

Why?

Because charcoal, stove, bulb, and other local heat sources can go off when nobody is there to monitor them. Rain can also make the environment colder within a short time.

A gas brooder gives more stable heat and makes brooding easier, especially in the raining season. But even with a gas brooder, close monitoring is still very important.

The first few days of brooding are very sensitive. Any mistake at this stage can affect the growth, health, and survival of the birds.

This raining season, don’t brood carelessly.

Good brooding is not just about putting chicks in a room and giving them feed and water.

Good brooding means giving them the right temperature, dry bedding, clean water, good ventilation, enough space, and constant monitoring.

Many losses in poultry start from poor brooding.
