So, Adeniyi Adeyemi has been arrested after a Federal High Court issued a bench warrant directing the police to arrest him and produce him in court for his arraignment.
This is the background story behind the court case.
The controversy began when Adeniyi Adeyemi started presenting himself as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC), claiming to head a federal agency responsible for attracting foreign investment into Nigeria.
However, the Presidency publicly denied the existence of the agency and stated that Adeyemi was never appointed to such a position. Despite this, he allegedly continued to operate from an office within the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, granting interviews, issuing official statements, and acting as though he was a presidential appointee.
Following investigations, the Nigeria Police charged him before the Federal High Court, Abuja, on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery, and impersonation. The police alleged that he forged appointment letters purportedly signed by the Chief of Staff to the President, used fake government seals, and operated a non-existent government agency.
A day before his arrest, Adeyemi appeared on Channels Television, insisting that he was not in hiding. He claimed he feared for his safety, alleged that he paid ₦400 million to secure the appointment, and called for an independent investigation into the council’s alleged ₦1.3 billion budget.
When the matter came up for arraignment, Adeyemi failed to appear in court. Consequently, the trial judge issued a bench warrant authorising the police to arrest him and bring him before the court. Hours later, operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arrested him in Osun State.
This will be a very interesting case, there are allegations and counter allegations flying around.
