The Female Soldier, Episode Two

“The so called wedding is coming up next week Saturday right?” The General asked with his husky tone. As usual, he and the female soldier were in the office. The General was writing something on a white piece of paper placed before him on the large table in the office. The female soldier was standing before him respectfully. She had come to request for a leave to enable her to have time to prepare for her wedding.

“Yes sir! I request for one month leave to enable me prepare adequately for my wedding and for my honeymoon. There are a lot of things I have not been able to do and the wedding date is already around the corner. Though there won’t be an elaborate ceremony, but I still need a few days off to put things in order sir.” The female soldier said respectfully.

“So you insist on getting married to that boy? You want to dare me right? You insist on defying my orders and you are going ahead to get married to that bloody civilian? Alright, I grant you one month leave, but don’t blame me if anything goes wrong. I thought you were a wise girl, but I never knew you are foolish.” The General said. He was very angry and the anger could be seen in his eyes. He dropped the blue pen he was using to write and picked up a red pen and used it to sign the document. He then the paper carefully and handed it over to the female soldier.

“Here is your permission for the leave. Hand it over to the admin and keep a copy for yourself.” The General said as he handed over the paper to the female soldier.

The female soldier collected the paper, saluted respectfully and left the office after taking permission to fall out. The preceeding days would become very busy for the female soldier. She and Acho, her fiancée had decided that they would make their wedding to be as simple as possible. It was not going to be anything elaborate. They wanted to save time and cost. They would simply go to the registry, say their vows in the presence of friends and family, and then come back home.

That afternoon when the female soldier got home, she called her fiancé and informed him that she had successfully taken a leave from work and that she was on her way to his house.

“Alright my love. I’m waiting for you and I can’t wait to set my eyes on you again. I miss you and I can’t wait for us to be together as husband and wife. Please, hurry up and please branch at the restaurant and buy me pouridge beans and one loaf of bread.” Acho said over the phone. He sounded very excited and the excitement in his voice made the female soldier to be very happy. She opened the gate in her compound and stepped out. She flagged a taxi and hoped in.

Just as Acho had pleaded with her, she had carried a food flask with which she used to buy a delicious portion of pouridge beans at the restaurant. She also bought freshly baked bread for him. She came out of the restaurant and hopped into the waiting taxi. Within a few minutes, they arrived at Acho’s house. She came down from the taxi happily and walked towards the door.

“Why is the door locked? Where did my fiancée go to? I was just talking with him only a few minutes ago. Why did he not tell me that he was going somewhere? I don’t like this kind of disappointment. Let me call his phone number.” The female soldier said as she brought out her phone and dialed Acho’s number.

The phone rang endlessly but no one picked up. She continued calling the line but no one answered. She had a spare key to Acho’s room but she did not carry it along. She left it in one of her purses at home.

“Let me go home and pick the key, then I will come back and open the door to see if he is inside the room with another woman.” The female solder said with anger. As she was going home, she continued to call the line but no one was picking and the phone was ringing. Instead of boarding a normal town service bus, she booked an Uber ride and it was not long before she picked the key from her house and returned to her fiancé’s apartment.

“If I catch another woman in this room, I will finish her without delay. My fiancée has never refused to pick my call. Why is this happening very close to our wedding day? Our wedding is coming up in one week and now this?” The female solder said. She quickly removed the key from her purse and opened Achu’s door with speed, but he was not in the room.

“But why is the room so scattered? This place looks like there have been a fight. Was he fighting with anyone? Did anything happen to him? Why did he just disappear after a few minutes of talking to me on the phone? My God, what is going on? God please let nothing happen to my Acho. Please protect him for me.” The female soldier said as tears started rolling down her tender cheeks. She might be a military woman, but she is very emotional when it comes to love. She is so deeply in love with Achu that she wouldn’t be able to endure it should anything bad happen to him.

The female soldier picked up her phone again and dialed the number, but still, no one picked.

“What happened to my fiancée for God’s sake?” The female soldier asked. As she was pacing around the room, she saw drops of blood on one of the pillows. There was also a blood stain on the door handle and there was a piece of broken beer bottle just close to the wardrobe. The broken bottle had blood stains on it.

“Now, I’m really scared.” The female soldier said. She picked up her phone, her purse and the food she had bought for Acho and ran out of the room. Immediately after she got to the roadside, she flagged a taxi. When she got to her house, she lay on the bed and wept. As she was weeping, her phone rang and she picked up quickly thinking it was her fiancée.

“We have your fiancée. We took him.” The caller said with a husky voice.

The Female Soldier, Episode One

“Don’t marry that man.” The General tells the female soldier standing before him. She was his orderly and he has grown to love her so much. However, the female soldier has rejected all his advances, insisting that their relationship must remain cordial, friendly, and respectful but never intimate. The General has however refused to give up. Even when he got a wedding invitation card from the female soldier, he vowed to punish her if she goes ahead to marry the love of her life.

It was a difficult situation for the female soldier. She did not know how to handle the problem and her fiancée, Acho is not yet aware that the General had interest her. She just kept it a secret believing that she could sort out the problem herself without letting her fiancé know, but the whole thing is getting out of hand.

“I won’t allow you marry anyone. You have been with me for more than five years and I have been trying to express my love for you and to get your attention all to no avail. Why are you stressing me so much? Am not handsome enough to be your man? Why are you chosing that little boy over me? Or do you think I’m too old to date you? A girl like you should be looking for a mature man that would take good care of her and not to be attached to a wretched soul like the one you have chosen to go to the altar with. I’m offering you a once in a life time opportunity to be my woman. This is actually what other girls are dying to get. I’m offering my love and money to you on the platter of gold but you keep rejecting me. Why are you doing this?” The General asked. As he stood up from his chair, the female soldier saw his big stomach bulging and threatening to tear his uniform.

“I’m engaged sir! And the date for my wedding has already been fixed. I can’t afford to call off the wedding because of you. Besides, you are married and you have children. You are even old enough to give birth to me...

Madam Bambina’s Brothel, Episode 9

(Final battle)

Maazi Okonta woke up that morning with a lot of expectations. He expected that the charms he mixed in Cheta’s pot of soup the night before would work wonders.

“By now, Cheta should be getting ready to go home with me. I’m very sure the charm worked. My trip to Libya will be a successful one if the charm works and she willingly follows me back to Nigeria. I don’t care what happens to the man who calls himself her husband. He can die for all I care. But I want my daughter to follow me back home and deliver the baby boy for me. That is all I’m asking for. I’m hopefull that the charm will work in my favour.” Maazi Okonta said. He was already packing his bags and getting ready. In his mind, he thinks Cheta too was getting ready.

“Let me go and check to see if she is getting ready too. I can’t wait to leave this house with my daughter. I want to take her to where she belongs, which is my compound.” Maazi Okonta stepped out of the guest room and came into the living room. When he entered the living room, he saw that there were two bags that were fully packed. Tunde was busy packing one other bag as if he was getting ready for a long journey. He took the first two bags outside and returned a few minutes later. He was loading the bags into a waiting car.

Maazi Okonta hid himself in one corner of the room leading to one of the toilets in the house. He did not want Tunde to see him. He wants to properly observe what he was doing.

“I said it! The charm is working wonders. Look at him packing my daughter’s bags for her. This is exactly what I asked the native doctor to do for me. I knew I would have the last laugh. Let me go and bring out my own bags.” Maazi Okonta said and hurried off into the guest room. He carried his bag and rushed out into the living room again. By that time, Tunde had finished packing the third bag and had already lifted it to his should and was moving out of the room.

“Wait for me! Why are you leaving without me?” Maazi Okonta asked Tunde. He was practically running after Tunde and he caught up with him outside the building.

“Don’t you know that I’m supposed to follow you?” Maazi Okonta shouted at Tunde. Tunde appeared to be under pressure so he did not respond to what the old man was saying. He opened the boot of the car and dropped the remaining bag. He then jumped into the car and mounted the driver’s seat. Maazi Okonta also dropped his bag in the boot of the car and jumped in. Tunde zoomed off.

The two of them did not say a word to each other. Tunde looked like someone who was stressed out. It appeared he didn’t sleep very well and his two eyes looked reddish. He kept mute and didn’t talk to Maazi Okonta.

Maazi Okonta saw all these things and concluded that the charm he mixed in the pot of soup the previous night worked very well.

“The charm worked too well. Look at his eyes. He is just driving me to the airport without knowing that I’m taking his wife away from him. He is not aware that I’m about to fly to Nigeria with his wife. I’m sure the charm made him to be confused. He probably don’t know that I’m the one sitting with him in this car. He will only realize himself when the aeroplane zooms off with me and Cheta in it. When I get to Nigeria, I will buy a fat goat to give to the native doctor who prepared the charm for me. He did a great job.” Maazi Okonta said in his heart. He was so happy, thinking that everything was working according to his plans.

“Where is Cheta? I haven’t seen her. Or did you drop her off before coming back to pick me up?” Maazi Okonta asked Tunde. He wanted to be sure that his daughter had gone ahead of them and that his plans are working.

“Yes! I dropped her off before coming back. She is already there.” Tunde responded without saying more. He was driving on a top speed and his eyes were focused on the tarred roads. The speed meter of the Toyota Camry was reading 180 and the car was literally flying.

“Take it easy please. Don’t you think the speed is too much? Please slow down.” Maazi Okonta said to Tunde.

“I can’t slow down. I was asked to return as fast as I could.” Tunde said without lifting his head or looking at Maazi Okonta.

Soon, he navigated a narrow road and turned left. The way he turned the steering looked so nice and effortless that Maazi Okonta thought Tunde was driving like a thief. Soon, they entered a street and soon, Tunde drove into a compound with a building which had a lush green colour. He jumped down from the car, unloaded the bags and started taking them into the building.

“This place does not look like an airport. Where is this and where is my daughter?” Maazi Okonta asked Tunde, using an unfriendly tone.

“Lets go pleases, there is no time to waste.” Tunde said as he walked away. Maazi Okonta had no option but to follow him closely. They turned right and entered a room. It was then that Maazi Okonta realized that they are in a hospital and Cheta had given birth to a baby girl. He was heartbroken and anger and disappointment showed on his face.

“Papa, look at my baby. My first child and your first grandchild. Are you not happy for me?” Cheta asked her father as soon as he entered the hospital ward.- Cheta had given birth around 4am in the morning and Tunde was asked to go back home and bring baby things to the hospital. That was when Maazi Okonta saw him and assumed he came to take him to the airport.

“My in-law, help me and rejoice. God has blessed me. Look at the baby. I think she resembles me.” Tunde said, smiling. Maazi Okonta did not want to hear what the two young people were saying, but had no option but to listen. He felt very terrible and remorsefull. Despite all his efforts, it turned out that the native doctor lied. The charm failed and Cheta did not only refuse to follow him back to Nigeria, she also gave birth to a baby girl instead of a boy as predicted by the native doctor. Maazi Okonta decided that it was time to give up.

“I think it is time for me to confess.” He said.

“What do you want to confess? This calls for a celebration and not for a confession.” Cheta replied her father.

“There is a lot to confess my daughter. I have wronged you. Since you were a child, I have done everything possible to stop you from getting married. I used charms to tie you to a tree in my compound. I was disappointed when the charm failed after you found Tunde. That was why I came to Libya. I actually brought another charm which I mixed in your pot of soup yesterday night. The charm was supposed to make you to abandon your husband and to follow me to Nigeria. But apparently, the charm has failed again. I did all these because I wanted you to remain in my compound and bear children in my name. I don’t have any other child apart from you and you happen to be a female. I needed someone to bear children in my name. This is why I did all the evil I did against you. Please forgive me. I have now realized that you and Tunde share a strong bond that cannot be broken. You are destined to be happy and I’m now forced to let you be. It shall be well with you my daughter.” Maazi Okonta said. Tunde and Cheta were shocked at what they heard. All the same, they did not want anything to ruin their happy moment so, they refused to take all the old man said to heart.

“Papa, I understand your pain. I forgive you. I promise you, I will bear a male child and name him after you. I’m happy you have realized your mistake. That is the most important thing. Please, come and carry the baby.” Cheta said as she handed over the child to her father. He was so happy to hold the child.

“Instead of going back to Nigeria, I think I should stay and do omugwo for you.” Maazi Okonta said. Everyone laughed, but that was exactly what happened. He stayed behind for another two months before returning to Nigeria to share the good news with his wife, Eberechi.

Cheta and Tunde remained happy ever after. Before you make that journey, make sure you know exactly where you are going. Don't travel out of your country by just following anyone who promised you heaven on earth. It’s risky!

THE END.
