Anxiety does not improve a situation but worsens it.
DATE: SUNDAY 24TH MAY, 2026
HYMN:
S, S & S 642. 'When we walk with the Lord'
TOPIC:
ANXIETY: BE CAREFUL FOR NOTHING.
TEXT : Phil.4:6-7:
Matt.6:25-34.
INTRODUCTION:
The subject of anxiety is about the uncertainties of life was pointedly
addressed by the Lord Jesus Christ. He was very
categorical about the futility of worrying without bounds. The natural man is full of anxiety about every stage and issue of life. He carries the burdens of tomorrow with fear and suspicion; makes no provision for faith and robs himself of natural
peace. It is against this
background that the Lord Jesus Christ took time to advise against being Overburdened with thoughts about basic
necessities of life. He teaches us that God cares, is able and most willing to provide for us. This Study is therefore presented to remind us as believers on the need to trust God for all our needs.
LESSON
OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of this lesson are to:
(1). explain the meaning of Anxiety
(2). list some natural attitudes to challenges of life;
(3). discuss why God instructed us not to be anxious;
(4). identify the dangers associated with anxiety and
(5) discuss some remedies for worry.
BIBLE TRUTH:
Q1(a). WHAT IS
ANXIETY?
Anxiety is an emotional feeling of nervousness or unease about something which has an uncertain
outcome. It is a feeling of being overwhelmed by the issues of life manifesting by way of intense fear and panic. It may be filled with a sense of impending danger or doom which result in increased heart
rate, rapid breathing and
inability to coordinate oneself effectively.
Common issues that trigger anxiety include ill-
health, insecurity, financial crisis, personal failure, disappointment and betrayal of trust.
Q1(b). WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CAREFUL
FOR NOTHING?
In the context of Phil.4:6-7, careful means to be very concerned and unusually burdened with worry. 'Be careful for nothing' therefore, means not to be unusually
burdened by the cares of this life. It is to respond to
challenges with faith, prayer and gratitude. It is to replace worry with prayer and fear with faith.
Q2. WHAT ARE THE NATURAL RESPONSES TO CHALLENGES OF
LIFE?
The first set of responses to challenges of life are innate and impulsive
emotions, followed by
naturally devised defensive mechanisms. They include, fear, nervousness, panic and
confusion. These are quickly followed in most cases by loss of coordination, loss of appetites, harmful negative thoughts and withdrawal associated with some level of
hostility or aggression.
Q3. WHY DID GOD INSTRUCT US NOT TO WORRY?
We are charged not to give room to anxiety because it contributes nothing to the solution we need. Under the heat of any challenge God desires that we are stable and full of faith towards Him. Our life is neither earned nor sustained by our worry. We should learn from lower
creatures who do not even toil, but are sustained generously by God's provisions. God wants us to understand the true revelation of His abundant provision, activate and use His nature in us and comprehend how much He had always loved us. Further more, God does not want us to
experience grievous harms usually associated with anxiety.
Q4. WHAT ARE SOME DANGERS ASSOCIATED
WITH PERSISTENT
ANXIETY?
Some negative effects of persistent anxiety include:
1. Breakdown in mental and physical health.
2. Inhibited personal
coordination and function.
3. Social disorientation
towards others in form of avoidance, hostility and
suspicion.
4. Declining interest in things of God, and
Backsliding
5. Evil thoughts and negative contemplations.
6. Resort to unhealthy
stimulants.
Q5. WHAT ARE THE REMEDIES FOR HABITUAL ANXIETY?
1Pet.5:7; Matt. 6:33; Phil.4:6-7.
The remedies for anxiety are diverse, based on
the cause and type. They are presented in groups as follows:
(a). Spiritual and scriptural remedies include meditation on God's word (Psalm. 119:165); prayer and
Supplications, faith and trust in God's care; worship: thanksgiving and praises to God; and fellowship with believers. The individual must also purge himself of all
bitterness, unforgiveness and strife as he opens up wholly to God.
(b). Medical and
psychological remedies include seeing a counsellor.
seeking medical evaluation and use of prescribed medications.
(c.) Physical remedies include appropriate physical exercises, breathing therapy,
adequate sleep, setting realistic goals, healthy diet and avoiding stress triggers.
DAILY LIVING
APPLICATION.
Anxiety derives its strength from ignorance, superstition, laziness and fear. To have faith in God is to rest your heart in His hands and to cast your cares upon Him. It is to
trust His words above your fears, and believe that He is able to do what appears dificult or impossible.
MEMORY VERSE:

"Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and Supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
