FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PNG CHIEFS SECURE SIGNING 003 WITH CONNOR WATSON COMMITTING TO PNG.

The PNG Chiefs are proud to announce the signing of Connor Watson, who becomes signing 003 for the club ahead of its entry into the NRL in 2028.

Watson has agreed to join the PNG Chiefs on a two-year deal for the 2028 and 2029 NRL seasons, marking another major step forward as the club continues building its inaugural roster and momentum towards 2028.

One of the NRL’s most respected and versatile players, Watson will arrive at the PNG Chiefs with extensive top-level experience across multiple positions, including ho**er, lock and the halves. His professionalism, leadership and team-first mentality have made him one of the game’s most valued players throughout his career.

Watson has built his career within some of the NRL’s strongest football systems, spending time with both the Newcastle Knights and Sydney Roosters, while also representing New South Wales on five occasions in State of Origin football.

As Signing 003, Watson joins the growing list of elite players committing to the PNG Chiefs project, reinforcing the club’s vision of building a world-class organisation grounded in culture, professionalism and long-term success.

PNG Chiefs General Manager Football Michael Chammas said Watson’s character and professionalism stood out throughout the recruitment process.

“Connor has made it clear from the outset that he wanted to be part of the PNG Chiefs and this incredible journey we are building.

“He and his partner Kiana recently spent time in Port Moresby and genuinely fell in love with the country, the people and the opportunity to be part of something much bigger than football.

“Connor is the type of player every club wants. He is selfless, tough, professional and incredibly respected across the game. His versatility and experience will be invaluable for us as we continue building our squad towards 2028.

OFFICIAL MEDIA RELEASE

KUMULS STAR RHYSE MARTIN JOINS PNG CHIEFS FOOTBALL DEPARTMENT.

The PNG Chiefs are proud to announce the appointment of Rhyse Martin as the club’s Football Operations Manager from 2027, marking another major milestone in the club’s build towards entry into the NRL.

Proudly connected to Hula in Central Province through his father, Martin returns home as one of Papua New Guinea’s most respected rugby league figures, having forged an outstanding professional career across both the NRL and Super League while becoming a leader and role model for the PNG Kumuls.

Martin made his international debut for PNG in 2014 and later captained the Kumuls, becoming one of the nation’s most capped representatives with 18 Test appearances. He remains the Kumuls all-time leading point scorer and one of the most recognisable PNG rugby league players of the modern era.

After making his NRL debut for the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2018, Martin went on to build an impressive Super League career with Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR, making more than 160 appearances in the UK competition. Over the past two seasons, Martin has worked under future PNG Chiefs Head Coach Willie Peters at Hull KR, where he established himself as one of the competition’s most consistent and respected performers.

Martin also holds the world record for the most consecutive goals kicked, with 41 straight conversions during his time at Leeds Rhinos.

Away from the field, Martin has continued to invest heavily in his leadership and education, completing a Bachelor of Science in Applied Sports Studies and developing a strong reputation for professionalism, preparation and player leadership.

As Football Operations Manager, Martin will oversee key football operations, player welfare and integration programs, while also helping support players and families transitioning to Papua New Guinea ahead of the club’s inaugural NRL season.

His appointment forms part of the PNG Chiefs’ long-term vision.

The PNG Chiefs' management is working on buying out Edwin Ipape's long-term contract to bring him back home at the moment. Meanwhile, Gairo Voro has a much clearer path to joining the Chiefs. The talented 22-year-old playmaker rejected an approach from the Perth Bears earlier this year and has committed his long-term future to the PNG franchise. As a free agent, when the Chiefs begin assembling their squad, Voro will not face the contractual barriers confronting Ipape.

Likewise, young prospects Morea Morea and Finley Glare are currently gaining valuable experience in England on short-term development deals under Kumuls coach Jason Demetriou. Their contracts are expected to provide far greater flexibility should they return to Papua New Guinea in the future.

LEADERSHIP styles differ and it is up to the people of Papua New Guinea to decide whether they support Prime Minister James Marape’s strong involvement surrounding PNG Chiefs development and recruitment processes, says East Sepik Governor Allan Bird.

“Well, I’m not a micro-manager, so I operate very differently,” Bird told The National. “Everybody operates differently. That’s the way the PM likes to do things. I don’t have a particular criticism. If it works, it works. If there are issues with it, then there are issues with it.”

The Chiefs project has continued to dominate rugby league discussions across Australia and PNG, especially after the signing of West Tigers playmaker Jarome Luai as “Chief Player 001”.
