Our new FB page is to introduce Pengy Farmers Co-operative Society (PFCS) to the FB community. PFCS was created in early 2021 by 20 locals of Kombau Village, Ward 40, Gelg 1, Baiyer LLG, Baiyer/Lumusa District in Western Highlands Province.
This new Community Based Organisation aim to eventually:
1. Become a a Market Intermediary that enables local substance farmers gain access to Markets in Mt Hagen City and other outside Markets..
2. Create a Training Centre that promotes bio-friendly and organic farming practice.
The members have committed over 10 hectors of land to PFCS which 70% comprising Coffee and another 30% of untouched natural forest.
To date, all construction, clearance and planting is complete and this year, our priority is to have a good management team in place, raise a maximum of K5000 to commence employment and purchase of fresh farm produce from local suppliers for our markets in Mt Hagen City and finally to distribute high-breed coffee seeds to local coffee farmers.
If all goes as planned, in June 2023, PFCS will be in a better position to add value to Baiyer Coffee as this is our main cash crop.
Like all new Organisation, we lack capital to kick start our programs. For the past 2 years the following are highlights of PFCS's achievements;
> Clearance of Planting Area and Planting of 3200 Bananas and Taros.
> Clearance of Coffee field and test planting of Vanillas alongside our Coffee trees.
> Completion of 6 Fish Ponds and trial rearing of 3 different species of fingerlings.
