𝐅𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐄: Behind price tags: ISU-CC, home for healthy and affordable food choices
Living in an era where food and other essentials proved to be victims of high inflation, the idea that being healthy is expensive seems to cloud the minds of people, leading them to just buy preserved goods from the grocery store. However, Isabela State University-Cauayan Campus (ISU-CC) begged to differ, as they opened doors for vendors to offer healthy and affordable food choices to students.
Being stuck in a strenuous class and overwhelmed with a pile of academic and organization activities, students, especially those who do boarding, opt to open canned goods for their meal as this makes their life easy. They tend to forget the value of being healthy in the midst of storms in their hectic college life.
But for students like Rowie Apostol, a first-year college student, it is an excellent move for the ISU-CC to have a food court that offers a variety of healthy and affordable food choices for as low as 55-60 php, consisting of rice, vegetable and meat. As he accounted, “Madali [pumili] since marami kang pagpipilian. And if healthy eater ka talaga, marami kang puwedeng bilhin.”
He also stated that having these choices from ISU-CC food court helped him to save some of his allowance because he only needs to cook rice for every meal which, in his case, saved him liquified petroleum gas, along with his time and effort. It also helps him guarantee his future self a healthier body and a wise perspective.
Furthermore, vendors from ISU-CC food court assured students that they sell affordable, healthy, and safe food choices in spite of the uncontrollable increasing cost for raw materials and supply shortage (e.g. meat, vegetables, lpg, etc.).
As per Ma’am Leilani Romero, the owner of Lanie’s Ladle—one of the best food counters in ISU-CC food court as testified by many—it is not only the students who benefit from the healthy and affordable food they sell, but also their suppliers and the business itself.
“Nagkakaroon kami ng friendly connection ng mga bata. Yung mga customer [at supplier] ko, mga kaibigan ko na sila.” Romero echoed.
She believed that having healthy and affordable food choices to offer does not only build a good physical condition, it also proposed trust for food safety and good connections and relation between the seller and its consumer and supplier.
While other people think that being healthy is draining your wallet, a wise choice and decision counters this mindset. The world has a lot of healthy and affordable food choices to offer. It is in the eye of the people to see, and the mind to think whether they are helpful to one’s self or not.
And in this world where practicality and convenience triumph for people, embrace simpleness: look for healthy yet affordable food choices as they are just around you, plan your meals, and have it in mind that being healthy will not cost you much, but having a healthy body will give you much.
