March 16, 2020 marked the start of ECQ, it is a day before the periodic check-up of my now 14yr old eldest son, John Ace Emmanuel (aka JAE). By background, he has been diagnosed with a rare kind of kidney disorder known as FSGS Nephrotic Syndrome since 3 yrs old in 2009. We were in and out of the hospital almost monthly if not more than once in a month. At his very young age, he was in maintenance meds and had even underwent chemo-pulsing for almost a year at aged 5. His case is an auto immune disease that is managed by his pedia nephro to taper steroid meds since then. But, when we met Intra in June 2015 our hospitalization and maintenance meds has significantly reduced to once last year only.
However, due to this pandemic, our source of income has been affected severely. In so doing, we were not able to afford to give him Intra for more than 2 to 3 weeks. Come July 19, we noticed that he is experiencing body edema that usually begins from his eye lids. We have apprehension of bringing him to the hospital due to the COVID situations. He is classified as a high risk patient compared to other individuals. We cannot contact his pedia nephro, so we decided to administer the increase to a full dose of his meds daily which normally is instructed to us during times like this. However, it seems that it's not taking effect. By July 25, his body edema became more evident in his stomach down to his legs and feet. That is why based from our past experience we know that he needs to undergo albumin transfusion so the excess water retained will eventually subside.
We are scared for my son's case and to top it all, we are also in deep financial constraint…I was already asking help from family and friends to assist us in securing intra for JAE..I was able to raise 4 intra and 2 nutriaplus from ate Mench San Agustin, friend Desiree Usi Abanador and GMD Elwin Sabuco…We noticed significant improvement on his body edema. After 4 days na sinabay namin sa full dose medication nya Ang INTRA and Nutriaplus, and egg white dark choco shake I concocted for him.
I was able to bring him for a check-up to the hospital come Aug. 1. His pedia nephro did not advised him anymore for an albumin transfusion, and we were sent home right away. We just have to be back after 2 weeks for his regular check-up, and was instructed to do the same thing I was doing as home treatment.
