Mango bagging project launched to improve quality, exports
Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) has launched its flagship “Pilot Project on Mango Bagging” and a training workshop in Multan to promote modern pre-harvest practices aimed at improving the quality and export value of Pakistani mangoes.

MULTAN, May 07 (APP):Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Company (PHDEC) has launched its flagship “Pilot Project on Mango Bagging” and a training workshop in Multan to promote modern pre-harvest practices aimed at improving the quality and export value of Pakistani mangoes.
The inauguration ceremony was held at the orchard of progressive grower Haji Mushtaq Ahmad Kalroo near Qasim Bela, where mango growers, exporters, business leaders, researchers and university representatives attended the event.
Officials said mango bagging is a scientifically proven pre-harvest technique in which developing fruit is covered with specialized bags to create a controlled environment. The process helps reduce fruit fly attacks, pesticide residues, sunburn and dust damage, while improving fruit color, size, skin quality and overall grading standards required for premium export markets.
PHDEC Chief Executive Officer Athar Hussain Khokhar said the project was initiated three years ago and, following encouraging results, the technology is now ready for wider adoption by the private sector. He observed that growers and exporters had shown increasing confidence in the initiative due to its positive impact on quality and profitability. Mango bagging is rapidly gaining popularity across Sindh and South Punjab, with many growers and exporters voluntarily investing in the technology. Exporters reported significant improvements in fruit quality and profits, with some farmers claiming nearly double returns compared to conventional practices.
The improved appearance and grading of bagged mangoes have also increased acceptance in international markets including Japan, South Korea, European Union, United States and China.
Mango expert Abdul Ghaffar Grewal, along with researchers Dr Asif ur Rehman and Dr Javed Iqbal, conducted technical sessions and field demonstrations on bagging techniques, timing and handling practices.
Speaking at the closing session, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asif Ali praised PHDEC’s efforts, saying such innovations are vital for strengthening Pakistan’s position in global mango markets and securing premium prices for growers.

🚨🥭 UAE SEA EXPORT ALERT 🥭🚨

⚠️ Main Risk: Shelf Life, Not Volume

Mango shelf life is typically 12–14 days from harvest, while export transit may require:

📅 4–5 Days: Harvest to Vessel Loading
🚢 5 Days: Sea Transit to UAE
📦 Additional Time: Clearance & Delivery

Any delay can result in fruit softening, quality deterioration, and commercial losses.

🔴 Current Assessment:
UAE sea shipments carry a very high quality and shelf-life risk.

✅ Strict pre-cooling
✅ Strong cold chain management
✅ Green Channel clearance preferred
