The Hospital's Hidden Floor
Written by: Emily Carter
When Olivia's sister-in-law, Hannah, gave birth to a healthy baby boy, the entire family was overjoyed.
Because Hannah had undergone a C-section, the doctors advised her to remain in the hospital for several days. Someone needed to stay with her and help care for the newborn, so Olivia volunteered without hesitation.
The private hospital room was comfortable, and Olivia didn't mind spending a few nights there.
The baby was born around 9:30 PM. Throughout the evening, family members came and went, bringing flowers, gifts, and congratulations.
By midnight, everyone had left.
Only Olivia, Hannah, and the sleeping newborn remained in the room.
Hannah was exhausted and quickly fell asleep. The baby slept peacefully beside her.
Olivia, however, couldn't sleep.
A cold December wind rattled the windows, and the narrow couch she was lying on wasn't exactly comfortable. After a while, she decided to find a restroom and maybe ask a nurse for an extra blanket.
The room had a small bathroom, but Olivia preferred using one farther down the hallway.
Quietly, she stepped outside.
The fourth floor was almost completely silent.
The long hallways stretched endlessly beneath dim fluorescent lights. Every distant sound seemed amplified in the eerie stillness.
As Olivia walked, she noticed a woman sitting alone on a bench.
The woman wore a hospital gown and sat motionless with her head lowered.
Relieved to see another person awake, Olivia approached her.
"Excuse me," she said. "Could you tell me where the restroom is?"
The woman slowly lifted her head.
Olivia immediately felt uneasy.
Her skin looked unnaturally pale. Dark circles surrounded her eyes, and her lips carried a faint bluish tint.
Without speaking, the woman raised one trembling hand and pointed toward the far end of the corridor.
"Down there?" Olivia asked.
The woman nodded once.
"Thank you."
Olivia continued walking.
After a few steps, a strange feeling made her glance back.
The bench was empty.
The woman had vanished.
Olivia stopped.
There was nowhere nearby for someone to disappear so quickly.
Trying to ignore the growing knot of fear in her stomach, she continued toward the restroom.
The hallway grew darker as she approached the far corner of the floor.
Inside the restroom, bright lights buzzed overhead.
Olivia stood at the sink washing her hands when she suddenly felt someone standing behind her.
A chill ran down her spine.
Slowly, she looked into the mirror.
The same woman stood directly behind her.
Olivia gasped and spun around.
Nothing.
The restroom was empty.
Heart pounding, she rushed toward the exit.
Then she heard it.
A low, painful groan.
The sound came from behind her.
Olivia turned.
The woman was crouched on the floor.
Her long black hair covered most of her face.
She was moving on all fours like some twisted animal.
Then she began crawling toward Olivia.
Fast.
Far too fast.
Olivia screamed and ran.
She raced down the hallway, barely aware of where she was going.
After several frantic moments, she realized something was wrong.
The corridor looked different.
The walls, lighting, and doors had changed.
This wasn't the fourth floor anymore.
Confused and terrified, she looked around.
A metal sign hung on the wall.
FLOOR 5 – MORGUE
Olivia froze.
The hospital only had four floors.
At least, that's what she thought.
Her breathing became shallow.
She hurried forward, desperate to find an elevator or stairwell.
At the far end of the corridor she spotted a staircase.
Without thinking, she climbed.
The stairs led upward into darkness.
When she finally reached the top, she found herself standing on a vast rooftop.
The city lights shimmered in the distance.
Otherwise, there was only silence.
Then she saw her.
Standing in the shadows.
Waiting.
The woman slowly emerged from the darkness.
This time her appearance was far worse.
Her face looked sunken and lifeless.
Her eyes seemed completely black.
She dropped to all fours.
And started moving toward Olivia.
Faster.
Closer.
Closer.
Olivia stumbled backward.
The creature reached her.
For one horrifying second, Olivia saw its face clearly.
Then everything went black.
---
Back in Hannah's room, the baby's crying woke her.
Olivia was gone.
Unable to move easily after surgery, Hannah immediately called the nurses.
Hospital staff searched the fourth floor.
Then the entire building.
Hours later, they found Olivia unconscious on the rooftop.
When she woke up, she told everyone about the mysterious woman, the hidden fifth floor, and the morgue corridor.
The staff exchanged confused looks.
Finally, one nurse spoke.
"There is no fifth floor in this hospital."
Olivia stared at her.
"What are you talking about? I saw it. I read the sign myself."
But every employee insisted the same thing.
The building had only four floors.
No fifth floor.
No hidden morgue corridor.
Nothing.
Later that morning, Olivia's father and brother arrived to take her home.
As their car pulled away, Olivia looked back at the hospital one last time.
A figure stood in an upper window.
Pale.
Motionless.
Watching her.
It was the same woman.
Olivia quickly turned away and shut her eyes.
Even years later, she still wonders what happened that night.
Who was the woman?
Where had she really gone?
And if the hospital never had a fifth floor...
Then where had she been?
