5 Teochew Words You'll Hear at a Fishball Shop

(I made a small mistake in the video 😅 “Ee” means round, not ball. Ball is “Kiu” Thanks to everyone who pointed it out!)

Really happy to be featured alongside other young hawkers who are choosing to continue Singapore’s hawker trade 🙌

Running an F&B business definitely isn’t easy. Long hours, rising costs, manpower issues and plenty of uncertainty. There were also many times when people asked me why I chose to come back to the family business when I could have taken a more comfortable path.

But after doing this for years, I still find it extremely rewarding.

For me, it’s being able to carry on something my grandfather started more than 60 years ago, work alongside my parents, and hopefully leave the business in a better place for the next generation.

What made me happiest about this article wasn’t just seeing my own story featured, but reading about other young hawkers like Shanice, Kenny and Yahiaoui who are also choosing to enter the trade and do things in their own way.

Our generation may run our businesses differently. We use social media, new technology and different business models. But I think the heart of it is still the same — making good food, serving our customers and keeping our local food culture alive.

It’s a tough industry, but I’m glad there are still young people willing to give it a shot.

Thank you Arundhati Hazra for taking the time to speak with us and for putting together such a thoughtful piece on the next generation of Singapore’s hawker culture. Really appreciate you sharing our stories. 🙏🏻

Hope to see more young people joining the trade in the years ahead! 🇸🇬
