Breaking News: Several Members of the AU Propose Military Intervention in Sudan As Soon As Possible
The African Union (AU) has proposed a military intervention in Sudan to address the escalating conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict has resulted in severe human rights abuses, including attacks on civilians, mass displacement, and a deepening humanitarian crisis.
The critical reasons for intervention are generally humanitarian priorities.
The proposed intervention stems from the inability of both warring factions to uphold basic human rights or engage in productive peace efforts. The AU aims to stabilize the region, safeguard civilians, and facilitate lasting peace by neutralizing the military capacity of both the SAF and RSF.
Composition of the Intervention Force will include some major countries in Africa and will not include the countries that might have hands in the conflict
The planned military coalition would be drawn from neutral African nations such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, and Tanzania. These countries are regarded as impartial and well-suited to lead a unified peacekeeping initiative. Nations like Egypt, Chad, the Central African Republic, and South Sudan are excluded due to their alleged direct or indirect involvement in the conflict, which undermines their neutrality.
AU will definitely need an effective support from the international community. To enhance operational effectiveness, the AU mission would rely on external support, including advanced air defense systems from international allies such as the United States, the European Union, and China. This assistance is deemed vital to swiftly dismantle the military capabilities of both the SAF and RSF, thereby minimizing civilian casualties and collateral damage. The strategy prioritizes neutralizing the combatant forces while safeguarding civilians and essential infrastructure.
