Scientists have developed a skin-inspired hydrogel designed to support rapid wound healing by mimicking important properties of human skin. Under experimental conditions, the material reportedly achieved around 90% wound closure within four hours and complete closure within 24 hours.

Hydrogels are water-rich materials already widely studied for wound care because they can maintain moisture, protect damaged tissue, and potentially deliver therapeutic compounds. Newer designs aim to respond more dynamically to wounds and interact more closely with biological tissues.

However, these results need important context. Laboratory and preclinical findings do not mean serious human wounds can routinely heal this quickly. Human wound healing depends on wound depth, infection, circulation, and overall health.

Cancer cells may use a sugar-rich protective coating to make themselves harder for the immune system to recognize and destroy. Researchers from Sanford Burnham Prebys and collaborating institutions studied how the tumor microenvironment can influence the formation of this protective barrier.

Their findings suggest that conditions surrounding a tumor, including tissue stiffness and nutrient availability, can alter cancer cell metabolism and strengthen the sugar-derived coating. Solid tumors are often physically stiffer than healthy tissue, creating environmental pressures that may contribute to these changes.

Published in Science Advances, the research offers new insight into how tumors evade immune attack. Scientists hope understanding these mechanisms could eventually support new approaches that make cancer cells easier for immune therapies to target.

A personalized mRNA cancer vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck has advanced through Phase 3 testing for high-risk melanoma. Called intismeran, the experimental treatment is designed individually using mutations found in each patient’s tumor and is given alongside Keytruda.

Unlike traditional vaccines that prevent infections, this treatment aims to train the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells carrying the patient’s unique tumor mutations. Earlier studies showed promising reductions in recurrence risk, and recent late-stage results have further strengthened optimism.

The treatment is still experimental and not yet approved. Full results and further regulatory review are needed before it could become a standard option for patients.

Walnuts contain ellagitannins, natural plant compounds that certain gut bacteria can transform into substances called urolithins, including urolithin A. Scientists are studying urolithin A because of its potential role in mitophagy, the cellular process that helps remove damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria.

Mitochondria produce much of the energy our cells need, and their function can decline with age. Research suggests urolithin A may support mitochondrial and muscle health, but the amount produced depends heavily on an individual's gut microbiome.

Not everyone produces urolithin A after eating walnuts, and research does not prove that eating walnuts exactly five times weekly guarantees mitochondrial “cleanup.” Still, walnuts remain a nutrient-rich food linked to several health benefits.

As men age, some blood and immune cells can lose the Y chromosome, a condition called mosaic loss of chromosome Y. This genetic change becomes more common with age, but smoking and certain environmental exposures have also been associated with higher levels of Y chromosome loss.

Researchers now believe this may be more than a harmless consequence of aging. Immune cells missing the Y chromosome may function differently, potentially contributing to inflammation, tissue scarring, and reduced protection against disease.

Studies have linked greater Y chromosome loss with higher risks of cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurodegenerative disease, and shorter lifespan. These findings show an association, not proof that chromosome loss directly causes every condition.

Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center discovered that T cells may use an alternative pathway to recognize and destroy acute myeloid leukemia cells. The finding challenges the long-standing assumption that T cells depend entirely on one conventional cancer-recognition mechanism.

Scientists were surprised to find that T cells continued killing AML cells even after a key component of the usual recognition machinery was removed. Further investigation identified a CD64-dependent pathway that allows immune cells to continue targeting leukemia while still requiring an intact T cell receptor.

Published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the research suggests the immune system may have more flexible ways of recognizing cancer than previously understood, potentially opening new directions for future leukemia immunotherapy.

The thymus is a small immune organ located behind the breastbone and in front of the heart. Its primary role is to help develop and train T cells, teaching them to recognize harmful germs while learning to tolerate the body’s own healthy tissues.

Although the thymus gradually shrinks with age, it does not simply become useless. Research suggests it continues contributing to immune function during adulthood, though its ability to produce new T cells declines over time.

Thymus removal is usually performed only when medically necessary, including for certain tumors or myasthenia gravis. Studies suggest the gland remains important throughout life, changing the old belief that it serves no purpose after childhood.

Presbyopia makes reading and close-up work harder as the eye’s natural lens gradually loses flexibility with age. The FDA-approved prescription eye drop VIZZ offers a temporary, nonsurgical way to improve near vision in adults with this condition.

The drops contain aceclidine, which gently constricts the pupil to create a pinhole effect that increases depth of focus. Clinical studies found that VIZZ improved near vision, with effects lasting for up to 10 hours while helping preserve distance vision. It was approved by the FDA in 2025.

VIZZ does not cure or reverse presbyopia, and temporary dim vision, irritation, and headache can occur. It should be used only under appropriate medical guidance.

Coronary artery calcification is the buildup of calcium within the arteries that supply blood to the heart. It usually develops alongside atherosclerosis, where cholesterol, inflammatory cells, and other substances build up inside artery walls and gradually form hardened plaques.

Most people with coronary artery calcification have no symptoms. A specialized CT scan, called a coronary calcium scan, can detect these hidden deposits and measure them using a calcium score. Higher scores generally indicate a greater burden of coronary artery disease and a higher future cardiovascular risk.

Finding calcification early can help doctors identify risk before symptoms appear and guide decisions about lifestyle changes, cholesterol management, and other preventive treatments.
