Pretty - while some of us were a little disappointed this calf didn’t get her mom’s beautiful color, Lucy immediately named her Pretty. Just another reminder from our four year old who never dwells on what isn’t, instead chooses gratitude for what is. She’s the most joyful and grateful person I’ve met and it’s contagious.

Lolly had this darling little lady this morning, I think we’ll name her Lady. She’s doing well and nursing mom already. We typically leave newborn calves with their mother for a week or two then put them in a pen with the rest of the calves. All our calves are fed fresh milk until weaning, organic cattle cannot have milk replacer.

Organic cattle are required to be on pasture for at least 120 days a year, during this time at least 30 percent of their diet must come from pasture. We achieve this through rotational grazing which allows the pastures to rest and regrow. Rotational grazing also provides other benefits such as reduced parasite exposure.

I asked Lucy to put the tablet away this morning as we weren’t going to play. She looks right at me and says “I’m not playing, I’m just going to order Dad some semen.” Gotta love those farm kids!

This summer brought many new experiences, challenges, and opportunities on the farm. One of those was the opportunity to participate in an organic research study with a graduate student from the University of Minnesota. Sam came out monthly to take data for her fly study, she took hair samples to provide genomic data, genetic and birth records, stool samples for parasitic analysis, and animal fly counts. This was an opportunity to teach the kids about complexities of scientific correlations as well as learn from Sam about a multitude of organic research projects the University dairy program has completed. We look forward to seeing the compiled results from the 1,000+ animals Sam tracked this summer.

Organic dairy production is more than just not utilizing antibiotics, as many people are familiar with. Fly control on organic farms presents unique challenges without conventional fly sprays, barn sprays, fly bombs, etc. As we move into the fall and winter I hope to continue share our experiences on the intricacies of organic dairy farming. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

These summer days just keep getting sweeter. Two new calves this week, baling hay and chopping oats, the workload is high but so are the blessings.

What a beautiful morning, extra grateful for the sunshine after the much needed rain earlier this week.

Look at those ears!! We have our first Brown Swiss cross on the farm and she’s an adorable little heifer. We are thrilled, the kids and I watched this first time Momma do a great job and have a picture perfect birth.

Springtime on the farm, new life abounds, babies are born, seeds are sown, the days are full. This week has been special and it’s only Tuesday. We’ve got a beautiful little holstein-jersey heifer calf, Lucy has 25 baby chicks (for sale if you’re looking), new pigs were just delivered from a friends farm. Kyle and the boys are working to get winter rye tilled under and new hay fields seeded down.

These truly are the good old days, we are so blessed!

Milking cows is exhausting… May your Sunday afternoon be as relaxing as Mabry’s time in the barn was this morning.

Pastures are starting to green up, temperatures are rising, and we’re all grateful! Springtime on the farm is a chance to reflect on the changing seasons with gratitude for the rest that winter provided while eagerly anticipating the growth summer holds.
