This summer brought many new experiences, challenges, and opportunities on the farm. One of those was the opportunity to participate in an organic research study with a graduate student from the University of Minnesota. Sam came out monthly to take data for her fly study, she took hair samples to provide genomic data, genetic and birth records, stool samples for parasitic analysis, and animal fly counts. This was an opportunity to teach the kids about complexities of scientific correlations as well as learn from Sam about a multitude of organic research projects the University dairy program has completed. We look forward to seeing the compiled results from the 1,000+ animals Sam tracked this summer.
Organic dairy production is more than just not utilizing antibiotics, as many people are familiar with. Fly control on organic farms presents unique challenges without conventional fly sprays, barn sprays, fly bombs, etc. As we move into the fall and winter I hope to continue share our experiences on the intricacies of organic dairy farming. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
