Brattleboro Food Co-op

Brattleboro Food Co-op The Brattleboro Food Co-op is your community-owned downtown marketplace & deli, providing Southern Vermont with healthy food choices since 1975. Welcome!

The Brattleboro Food Co-op was formed in 1975 as a small buying club. Today, the Co-op is a 14,580 square foot natural foods market and deli on the ground floor of a four-story building that also includes Co-op offices, a commissary kitchen, a cooking classroom, and 24 apartments. This beautiful downtown anchor building is a result of a collaboration with the Windham and Windsor Housing Trust and

Housing Vermont, with many environmentally friendly features, including utilizing refrigeration waste heat to heat apartments and the store, solar panels on the roof, and many more. The current store opened for business in June of 2012. The Co-op is community-owned, with over 8,000 active shareholders, and our goal is to be as accessible and responsive to you as possible. We strive to provide you with quality foods at reasonable prices, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Our staff is knowledgeable and eager to help shoppers in any way that they can. We are located in southeastern Vermont, just over the Massachusetts and New Hampshire borders. Our community offers beautiful Vermont countryside, a lively cultural scene, and easy access to skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities. The Brattleboro Food Co-op places a strong emphasis on supporting local producers. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to develop personal relationships with local farmers and businesses, and we enjoy introducing their products to our customers. Our "Producer of the Month" program highlights local growers and vendors in an effort to strengthen our local economy and promote the value of buying locally. Through charitable giving, Co-op sponsored events, classes, and programs, we strive to build relationships within our community. We offer nutrition classes in our local school systems and recently launched a "Healthy Snack Program" which provides a way for teachers to introduce nutritious snacks into their classrooms.

Next up for the refrigeration project: Grab & Go. From Sunday evening through Tuesday we will have a temporary cooler for Grab & Go, which will have customer favorites, like peanut noodles, dips, and small items. We will temporarily pause larger items like Kale Bowls and Power Bowls.

That makes it a particularly good few days to check our our sandwich menu for lunch!!! Pictured here is the Vermonter, which has oven roasted turkey, maple jam, apple, bacon, and cheddar cheese on sourdough.

Our deli has just switched over to Joe's Kitchen soup at the hot bar!! Joe's Kitchen is based out of Montpelier (hooray, Vermont producers!!) and uses Vermont produce as often as they possibly can. They started by making soups for CSA Members at the Montpelier Farmer's Market and now you can find their soup at local bakeries and Co-ops in Vermont. Our deli has made some big moves towards local in the past year and we are so inspired by their commitment to our Co-op values. Go Deli Team!!!

Also look for some delicious soup accoutrement, such as corn bread and other delicious treats to go with your soup, for 99 cents or less!!

A while back we partnered with Martha’s Passions, a small, woman-owned business based in Southern Vermont, to support the upcycling of produce mesh bags. We sell Martha’s creations: cute little kitchen scrubbies that she makes by hand from the netting.

You can participate by putting your produce netting in this collection box in the Produce Department.

On Friday, May 22nd from 11:30am to 2:30pm Ben from Esselon Coffee will be hosting a tasting of their Ethiopia, Guatemala, and French Roast coffees.

Esselon sources fair-trade, organic, ethically responsible coffee that they roast locally in small batches throughout the week, so it's super fresh! Ben is a coffee expert and he might just be able to tell you how to make the best cold drink to enjoy during the heat. Plus we have their coffee in bulk!

The Wellness Department has put together a beautiful Mother's Day selection with sustainability, skin sensitivity, and community support in mind. We are particularly loving Mom Bombs, a bath bomb company that uses vegan, all natural ingredients and donates 100% of net profits to their own 501(c)(3), which provides grants to moms in crisis for services like meal delivery, childcare, housekeeping, and transportation.

And, of course, our flowers are stunning right now and we are stocked up on cute cakes, quiche, and lots of other goodies to give or treat yourself with.

We will have dairy basics available for you, including milk, butter, eggs, and the most popular yogurts and tofu, but expect limited dairy options from May 10th to May 16th. It’s fiddlehead season! John, our Produce Manager, recently educated us about how important it is to choose your fiddlehead forager wisely. It’s “easy” to be a fiddlehead forager because they grow pretty abundantly in the spring, but it does take some expertise to do it the right way. John chose the forager he works with much like he has chosen which farms to work with throughout the years – by evaluating whether or not their methodologies align with the goals of the Co-op. For fiddleads, specifically, you need to trust the forager to bring you a good crop without destroying the patch. If you overharvest from a fiddlehead patch, it will not regrow the next year, which compromises both the ecology of the area and our ability to enjoy fiddleheads in the future. Luckily John has been working with an excellent Vermont forager for many, many years who we trust to sustainably harvest high-quality fiddleheads.
