Brattleboro Food Co-op The Brattleboro Food Co-op is your community-owned downtown marketplace & deli, providing Southern Vermont with healthy food choices since 1975. Welcome!

The Brattleboro Food Co-op was formed in 1975 as a small buying club. Today, the Co-op is a 14,580 square foot natural foods market and deli on the ground floor of a four-story building that also includes Co-op offices, a commissary kitchen, a cooking classroom, and 24 apartments. This beautiful downtown anchor building is a result of a collaboration with the Windham and Windsor Housing Trust and

Housing Vermont, with many environmentally friendly features, including utilizing refrigeration waste heat to heat apartments and the store, solar panels on the roof, and many more. The current store opened for business in June of 2012. The Co-op is community-owned, with over 8,000 active shareholders, and our goal is to be as accessible and responsive to you as possible. We strive to provide you with quality foods at reasonable prices, in a relaxed and friendly environment. Our staff is knowledgeable and eager to help shoppers in any way that they can. We are located in southeastern Vermont, just over the Massachusetts and New Hampshire borders. Our community offers beautiful Vermont countryside, a lively cultural scene, and easy access to skiing, hiking and other outdoor activities. The Brattleboro Food Co-op places a strong emphasis on supporting local producers. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to develop personal relationships with local farmers and businesses, and we enjoy introducing their products to our customers. Our "Producer of the Month" program highlights local growers and vendors in an effort to strengthen our local economy and promote the value of buying locally. Through charitable giving, Co-op sponsored events, classes, and programs, we strive to build relationships within our community. We offer nutrition classes in our local school systems and recently launched a "Healthy Snack Program" which provides a way for teachers to introduce nutritious snacks into their classrooms.

Well, unfortunately as of Thursday evening the issues with our equipment have not been resolved. We are open and going strong in every department except for a couple things.
We DO have pre-made sandwiches, Grab & Go, salad bar, and the full Deli case line, plus allllllll the other wonderful groceries and everything.
What we DON'T have:
public bathroom access
café seating
hot food, soups, pizza, or made-to-order sandwiches

We're working so very hard to get everything back to normal. The brown out that occurred this morning really did a number on us! We'll report back soon.

We support over 540 New England Producers throughout the store and around 250 of those are Vermont producers. We are extra proud of that during summer harvest season when we get to enjoy the special fruits and veggies grown here. So many fruits and vegetables have been standardized to optimize for travel time, so getting to enjoy heirloom varieties at this time of the year is such a treat. Savor the beauty of life!!

The Brattleboro Literary Festival isn't for another few months, but we are supporting their efforts this month with our Round Up program! This festival has grown substantially over the years and draws locals and tourists from all over to celebrate the arts in our town. Plus it is COMPLETELY FREE TO ATTEND, which is a big part of why we love it so, so much. Cheers to making deeply beautiful art accessible to everyone!!

Hello from the Produce Department! Here you can see Liam tending the veggies. You may have noticed our new look, new fixtures, and new coolers and we wanted to tell you that all of this change is not just about aesthetics and it's not even about "staying modern". Yes, everything does look sleeker, but that's just the cherry on top of the Produce Department.

All of this equipment is designed to run on coolants that have a Global Warming Potential of ONE rather than HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS. "The larger the GWP, the more that a given gas warms the Earth compared to CO2 over that time period. The time period usually used for GWPs is 100 years.", as stated directly by the Environmental Protection Agency.

For anyone who really wants to get into the nitty gritty of these systems, you can read here, though we'll also say we are doing this project with Turner Piping and Refrigeration, a Vermont company.:

The Brattleboro Food Co-op has donated $19,500 to Foodworks!! This donation was made possible by our incredible shareholders here at the Barttleboro Food Co-op who generously opted to donate their dividends to this cause.

The Co-op returns a share of its profits to its shareholders in the form of patronage dividends in years when it is financially feasible. Shareholders who did not redeem their dividend by June 30 had it automatically directed to this donation; others chose to give their dividend to Foodworks proactively. Together, these contributions total $19,500 for Foodworks.

Foodworks, designed as a welcoming neighborhood grocery store at 141 Canal Street, serves nearly 5,000 individuals annually, including more than 1,200 children, through more than 12,000 yearly shopping transactions. The program, which is the most heavily utilized food shelf in the region, rescues and redistributes over $540,000 worth of food from area grocery stores each year and purchases food at wholesale prices through a partnership with the Vermont Foodbank, offering customers a free choice model of shopping. Foodworks is open to anyone who could use assistance putting food on the table, with no pre-registration or income verification required.
