Living Memories
Between getting our children off to school, going to work, grocery shopping, paying the bills, soccer practice and all the “trappings” of family life, we tend to forget the one thing that got us here . . . We want to help you preserve that history by capturing and celebrating your family stories. What do we know about our grandparents, or our great grandparents? Where did they com

e from? What about those wonderful stories they told us? Who will tell them now? Why didn’t we think to ask . . . .? Let us honor and preserve your history with DVDs, photos, music, transcripts, interviews with subject, friends, other family members. Connect future generations with a family documentary

Sometimes we just need to see the ocean. My mother lives on the coast and used to enjoy painting and walking on the beach, but these days she does not venture out onto the sand. At 85, walking on sand is not easy and falling down and getting up is definitely a physical struggle. Watching our parents age is hard. I now belong to a group that meets monthly to discuss our aging parents. This has been so informative and I encourage others to meet up with friends to discuss the frustrations, fun times, and how we can help our parents. I know I'm not getting any younger!

Growing up on the east coast felt so far away from my grandparents. Every other summer we drove to Kansas (with my father threatening to turn around when we started arguing in the backseat). Even into adulthood I looked forward to this trip. We got to see our grandparents in their lovely little town and visit with many aunts and uncles. We especially loved hanging out with our cousins. Then a sad day came when a tornado took the barns out on the farm. Thankfully, my grandparents lived in town. The town of Little River came together to help my grandparents clean up all the ravages that tornado did.

I wish I could have interviewed my Grandparents on both sides. When I was in college I was required to write about an ancestor that had passed away. Instead (and I did get downgraded for this) I wrote about my grandfather, Charlie Wilson, who was alive and well. I still have that paper and the funny this is, when I shared it with my aunt, she learned things about her father that she never knew. Now, we have videos or audio. Sit down with your parents, get their stories because I guarantee you will have questions later that only they can answer. Ex: where did you meet Mom (grandma/grandpa)? Sunday dinners? WW2? Depression? (I find this one interesting b/c most of the answers were "we didn't realize we were poor."

My grandparents were very involved in their community. My grandfather was a Republican and my grandmother a Democrat. They would joke that they canceled each others vote. I am sure they would be appalled by the rancor in this election. I also feel that my grandmother, a former teacher, would have voted for the first female president.

Holidays are coming up, families will share meals, open presents, reminisce, and laugh. This is the time to use the video on your phone or camera - save those memories, interview your folks, you will never regret it.

How many generations? One photo can tell a story. The great grandmothers, the grandmother, the grandchildren. This header photo is from the 1980's. Time flies by, don't let those stories disappear.

I have worked on videos for several families and have been amazed at the stories that were shared and many times that had never been heard before. Finally I found the time to do my own family's video. I finished in the fall of 2015 and shared the video with my cousins and sisters. I felt joyful when I heard everyone laugh and talk about the stories my mother and aunt told about growing up on the farm, how they met our dads, and then some stories and old videos from the rest of the family. In doing research on this and further into Ancestry I discovered additional information that even my mother didn't know, plus, correcting some of the stories that were handed down. Now I know that we come from Ireland, Scotland, France, Sweden, Germany and Switzerland. We have a signer of the Declaration of Independence, many fought in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War, had a plantation in NC, but most of my relatives moved west to Indiana and Kansas. It makes me wonder what drove them? Their hardships? This is why I like to preserve family stories -it's the history!!

My aunt has Alzheimer disease. A very sad disease to have - memories lost, the body does not function as it should and day to day is a struggle for my aunt and her caretaker - my uncle. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to interview her 5 years ago. She is a delightful person and has had a very interesting life. Don't let these moments and memories slide by. Talk to your relatives, record each word. Down the road these will be precious to you.
